I love these authors together. not as much as I love Kaufman with Jay Kristoff, but I still adore their writing.

I received a digital advance reader copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

the story is fun and interesting. there's a lot of science, adventure, action, and romance - basically what you'd expect if you've read their other trilogy. while some of it bears similarities - space opera, alien threat, military threat, girl/boy romantic leads - it is a very different world still. I really enjoyed it and am very much looking forward to the sequel!

Just reread it because the sequel comes out tomorrow! Super excited.
adventurous mysterious tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

This book was a mess and I'm so confused but I need the sequel.

A fun scifi book!
Indiana Jones in space is what I would say is the perfect way to describe this book!
It didn't wow but but was enjoyable!

So... I couldn't finish it :(

The last 1/4th of the book was pretty good. I liked the twist about the Undying but mostly I was underwhelmed. I was really looking forward to this book based on the description and my love for Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner but alas I just expected more.
I wasn't a huge fan of the alternating chapters from the beginning especially when it was just alternating points of "Wow I like this person. I shouldn't like this person. She/He is so hot blah blah blah".
I'm intrigued about the sequel because of the twist at the end of this book so hopefully I'll enjoy it a little more.

Cliffhanger ending! But a fun book with adventure on an alien planet... I'll probably read the 2nd one.

Fifty years ago, Earth received a broadcast from an alien race calling themselves the Undying, which led them to Gaia, a desert planet with temples that may hide technology that has the possibility to save an overcrowded Earth. Jules Addison is convinced that there's more to the promise of the temples than meets the eye. Amelia Radcliffe is just trying to grab as much alien tech as she can sell.

Unearthed is a fun, fast-paced scifi adventure with two well-developed main characters, excellent pacing, some thoughtful reflections on privilege, and a cliffhanger of an ending that's just evil. It's very much a book that I could easily see becoming a movie, with its sweetly burgeoning romance between Jules and Mia and Indiana Jones-esque series of challenges it throws in its protagonists' ways, but a movie that I would totally watch. Jules and Mia are both very believable and likable characters and there's some surprisingly considered reflection on how their backgrounds and experiences have shaped their beliefs. The action is engaging and well-written, the world-building is solid, and I'm extremely invested in seeing where the next book goes.

When we allow ourselves to explore, we discover destinations that were never on our map.

Not to be dramatic or anything but if this doesn't live up to its Indiana Jones in space claim, I'm gonna cry.

Edit: I'm not crying, but this definitely wasn't Indiana Jones in space, either.

What I loved the most about this book, was obviously the writing. It's no secret that both Kaufman and Spooner are among my favorite authors in terms of prose, but I found the plot to be a little too slow for this kind of book.
Sure, Mia and Jules' journey was pretty entertaining as were their interactions, but I felt like something was missing and I found the world-building slightly confusing at first.
I still loved the twists and some of the action scenes, but I expected it to be more adventurous, if you know what I mean.

#PenguinOnATBRMission: book #14

this hashtag is something I self-indulgently created for fun when I decided to thin out my immense tbr list as a new years resolution starting from books I added on GR back in 2017/2018/2019, and since I can't seem to do anything quietly and I'm well known for being an overachiever, I had to go and turn it into an official thing. Feel free to check out the shelf with the same name if you don't mind keeping up with this insanely over-hyped adventure I got myself into. Take it as a chance to rediscover some books from a few years ago that might have accidentally flown under your radar, or to simply share with another fellow reader your very own reading experience. Happy reading and stay penguin-y!
