*3.75/5 not as good as Starbound stars*
“We may be the only ones who think that braving a series of crumbling death traps is proof of good decision making.”
This was so entertaining! I really enjoyed reading this book and think that everyone who liked/loved Starbound trilogy will be into this one as well. I liked both of the characters - Especially Jules. Such a sweet, sweet extremely idealistic nerd! - their banter and interactions were fun (although I'm not yet sold on the romance aspect), the plot, while being for the most part only about Indiana Jones (or Flynn Carsen) like traps etc, still grabbed me from the start and there was even one plot twist that I did not expect at all.
Also, the ending was just cruel since book two is not even out yet! Absolutely unapologetic cliffhanger!!
“But their vision is locked so firmly on this one earthly goal that they forget to lift their gazes. They forget to see the stars, as humanity once did, as we all used to do when we were children. When we learned about other stories and cultures for the sake of doing so, for how those revelations changed us, what they made us. Gaia is the chance to learn on a scale we’ve never imagined before, and instead we’ve become traitors and thieves.”
--------------------
This book was compared to Indiana Jones in Space and.. Confession time: I never liked Indiana Jones. I preferred Flynn Carsen movies.
But I really enjoyed the Starbound trilogy and this seems like a fun book to get into.

This book was fine I guess. Like I didn't hate it but I most certainly didn't love it either. I really didn't like the insta love between the two main characters because that was incredibly annoying. I also found the book overall to be full of tropes and because of that it was quite predictable. I was able to guess most of the plot twists or at least the nature of them before they happened. I did like the two main characters when they weren't thinking about each other and I did enjoy parts of this, but overall this was just not for me.

*UPDATE 4/20/2023*
I'll be honest I had forgotten so much of this series including that I read it already lol
BUT... that being said I LOVED IT!
My initial review stands.
It is a dystopian society, but because our story begins in an alien planet we're spared from actually seeing the flaws and horrible situations back on earth (we do hear little snippets.) I'm sure this will change in the second book, mostly because of how this book ends. Which I apparently already mentioned lol, it ends with a huge cliffhanger.
The characters are lovable, although I will say that I found Jules very naive but Amelia was also very impulsive so they balanced each other out.
*****Amazing read, 5 stars*****

Get ready for a cliffhanger. If you're the type of person who cannot stand cliffhangers I suggest you have the second book on you when you finish this book, because this ends in a major cliffhanger.
I loved this book. I've come to realize that I love the partnership between Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. Their writing is addictive, it's exciting, adventurous, and the romance is perfect. I really like the two main characters. They're were raised to think, act, and care about different things, but somehow they connect and end up being a team.
It was a great book to read. It held my interest and towards the end I was at the edge of my seat.

I thought this was a fun YA SF romance/adventure book that had a Romancing the Stone feel to it.
I've read the Starbound trilogy by Kaufman and Spooner and I felt that my expectations were basically met. I liked the Oxford academic pairs with streets smart scavenger storyline, and I felt that Jules and Mia had pretty good chemistry.
My only complaint is that in parts where the backstory of the discovery and exploration of Gaia and the Undying were given it was a tiny bit repetitive now and then. But it wasn't enough to keep me from enjoying the book.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and while I didn't love the female narrator, I got used to her after a while. Steve West narrated Jules' chapters, and while I do love his voice, it almost seemed a bit too mature for the part. Overall though, I liked it and thought the audiobook was a good way to go.
Of course there is a cliffhanger ending, but luckily the conclusion of this duology just came out! I'll be reading [b:Undying|26839798|Undying (Unearthed, #2)|Amie Kaufman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1526952654s/26839798.jpg|46874036] very soon.

Ooooo, cooler than I initially thought it’d be. Gonna start the sequel NOW!!! 🤓💜📚

Why?
Short answer: insta-obsession/infatuation/love.
Long answer:
*Sigh* And it had so much potential.
I love treasure hunting stories. I love aliens and their civilizations. Combine the two and I should have been in heaven. Instead I get this insta-love mess where as soon as anything halfway interesting happens, Amelia or Jules has to notice something about the other - how pretty his smile is, or how she's…a girl. Because, really, I think Jules is shallow enough that that's his only requirement for liking Amelia. A girl. Because that's the only 'good' quality he seems to focus on. Which, truly, I can understand, because Amelia doesn't actually have any good qualities. I mean…you remember K&S's previous trilogy together? Remember the second book and Lee? I couldn't stand her. Amelia reminds me so strongly of her that it's not even funny.
And...honestly, I'm used to the YA trend of super great/smart/talented teen doing what adults can't. But in this book, we are constantly told how Amelia beat out a bunch of adults that were more experienced salvagers than she because…because…because…uhm… we wouldn't have a story otherwise? (Which, if the characters weren't so easily swayed by a pretty face, I might have been able to forgive this, but it was just piled on. And before page 40, Jules has already given Amelia a nickname. Seems soon? Amelia gives him one on first meeting. How sweet. You can tell they are hardcore YA destined for each other. Blech.)

This is one of those books that start small. Very small. Then things start to unfold, more things start to happen, and, before you know it, things have snowballed into one giant mess. There was one hurdle after the other. Characters had no time to breathe. In turn, readers had no time to breathe either. So much is happening so fast that you begin to wonder whaaaaaat the hell is happening?! Few pages ago we had this problem, now we have that problem, but turns out that problem was nothing compared to this new problem. AAaaaagghhh!
So, the book was great. The characters were lovely. There were little to no cliches. And *gasp* well developed relationship! You never see THAT happening in a YA novel. But, that cliffhanger. That naaaaaasty cliffhanger. GAH! I'll have to wait a year now to know more about the Undying! Anyway, had a good time with it. Good book, very good book.

Just Wow for an answer for this review.
After following illuminae files I am linking Amie Kaufman's imagination of the icnredible premises she is bringing into life in her books.
I feel like I took a serious, life engulfing adventure with a point of no return to the land of two suns- Gaia. I am still not able to come out of it with such a cliffhanger going to keep me insane till I read the sequel.
I love Jules and Mia equally and actually happy at the characterization. Not a typical bad boy or a too good boy to be true. And seriously not a drop dead gorgeous girl, the pampered princess or a kind of foul mouthed teenager. The nerdy cute aspect and the determination to prove the world endears us to Jules more. And Mia's one and only reason which makes to do everything she did not want to do. The revelations, the betrayals and the cunning plans add more twists to this already interesting story.
The other characters like Liz, Hansen and Javier also make sure to leave an impression. Even Mink, Charlotte too.The invisible supporting characters have also been created well- Addison and Evie the main reasons for the decisions that were taken in the beginning.
I personally liked the building of the temple and scavenger groups. The glyph and the warnings and finally the unimaginable finding and the result
