I absolutely love the Illuminae Trilogy that Amie Kaufman co-wrote with Jay Kristoff. So, it is possible I came into this book with a bit higher expectations than I should have had. I liked the premise and the book dives right away into the action. I liked the two main characters individually, but the somewhat angsty drama between them feels a little forced. Perhaps that is the only way they could make the romance part have any weight against the action, horror, and struggle for survival that takes up the rest of the book.
I want to read the next book, but it isn't high on my list....

Man, I was really excited for this book when I heard about it. And it was good. But not as amazing as I was hoping.
Earth is suffering from environmental damage and limited resources when they receive a message from an alien race that went extinct before humans had language. The Undying were advanced beyond anything humans have invented and the people of Earth hoped that this would be the key to reversing the devastation that has ravaged the planet. Jules wants to study this alien culture and Amelia is only interested in earning enough money for herself and her sister. When this unlikely pair ends up stuck with each other, the stakes change and the outcome cannot be predicted.
Unearthed is the first book in a new series with the same title. This science fiction tale is set in the not too distant future when humans realize their mistakes and are trying to find solutions. As most people know, the ends do not always justify the means and our two lead characters discover many shady transactions and not so honest people. Kaufman has created a new storyline that is easy to relate to and readers will quickly find themselves wanting to know what will happen to Jules and Amelia. Readers be forewarned, the ending is not a cliff hanger, but it also will leave you the undeniable need to know what happens next.

DNF’d at about 40%.
There was way to much explaining and monologues the repeated them selves.
Barely any dialogue, and the plot wasn’t good enough to get past the mediocre writing.
I expected a lot coming from reading Amie’s book with Jay Kristoff but was greatly disappointed

Fast paced and super fun, much like their Starbound trilogy.
Very Indiana Jones in space - I'd totally watch this movie! I'm not exactly sure how I feel about the ending but gotta read the sequel I suppose!
All I’m saying is: if you love space and planets and mysteries and romance READ THIS BOOK!!!
This was such a fun read! I didn't want to put this book down at all. I definitely can't wait for the next book in the series.
I met these authors on their book release tour earlier this month, and they are both so friendly. I absolutely loved the Starbound Triology, and can't wait to read more works from these amazing authors!

Unearthed by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner is definitely one of my most anticipated reads for 2018, and I absolutely couldn't wait to get started on the book. I have read two books from the Starbound series by these authors in the past, as well as Amie's Illuminae Files series (co-written with Jay Kristoff), and I enjoyed all of these books immensely, so I knew I would enjoy this book as well. And I did!
The story is told from alternate viewpoints between Mia, a scavenger who has traveled to an alien planet to look for loot to sale, and Jules, a scholar who wants to study the alien culture before scavengers like Mia destroy it all. Mia is a survivor; she does what she has to do it make it through the day to day, and wants nothing more than to take care of her sister, the only family she has. Jules is the brains, wanting to know more and more about the ancient world that could eventually save the dying Earth. When these two form an unlikely alliance, they are pretty much unstoppable.
I've never really been much of a sci-fi fan, at least not until recently, but the more I read the genre, the more I enjoy it. (At least books like these, anyway.) I love the whole alien planet, and being in outer space. This book has all that, and also has a bit of an Indiana Jones feel through the first half of the book, which was interesting, but also a bit slower-paced than the second half of the book. That's where the action really kicked in. But that ending... that ending is what really got me. (Seriously?! How could the book possibly end that way??) Gah. What a great way to ensure I'll be over here pining away for the rest of the year waiting on the next book to be released! *grin*
Overall; If you can't tell by all the gushing I did above, I really enjoyed Unearthed! Especially the last half of it, and after that ending, I will definitely anticipating the release of the second book. Lucky for me I still have the Illuminae and Starbound series to read this year, both series I am starting over so I can read them from start to end, so I'll at least have something to keep me busy while I wait! If you're a fan of either of these series, or just a fan of sci-fi in general, do check out Unearthed when you can!
Happy Reading!!
