Nothing was happening! I loved the historical setting but there was a lot of explaining everything to the reader and the main characters was just ‘meh’ .  So got bored and dnf’d

I was recommended this book because I have a huge love for witchy media and I really wanted to like this book but sadly I did not. The main character Nellie's main character flaw is her fear. With the book starting out in 1824 her fear of men makes sense but literally any man who appears during this section acts like the most stereotypical creep that ever was. This is somewhat forgiven due to the time, and later the discovery of the supernatural misogynistic influence, but it is incredibly heavy handed. Next is Nellie's own selfishness. spoiler>When the apothecary burns down Nellie flees Edinburgh without taking her little brother, who has been neglected for a good portion of the book despite Nellie's constant thoughts of how he wouldn't survive without her care. After her leaving Scotland, and traveling the world for two centuries, Nellie refuses to meet up with any other witches and acts as if she's being pursued by the big bad of the story when she very much isn't. Also our big bad, Angus, is this embodiment of misogyny who is trying to strip women of their power and independence and during the 1800s feels like an actual threat but by the time we get to 2022 and he's taken on the form of the Dean of the university Nellie's daughter attends he is incredibly and laughably out of his depth. With the power of social media and the new generation of witches, students of the university, and locals of Edinburgh, they defeat Angus by having a sit in... I understand that maybe I'm not the target audience for this book being a cisgender dude but I've enjoyed several female led stories, especially witchy ones, and it just didn't do it for me. Even the romantic aspect made me roll my eyes a few times because it was so obvious that they were going to end up together, so any deterrent to their being together felt like pointless drama.
