I read reviews where people said this wasn't one of her better ones. And they were right. A ghost point of view? Give me a break.

Well, I am glad I pushed through to the last third of the book when it actually became enticing. This is a very full, dry book before then, with so many characters and plot lines that it almost seems as though the ending was a bit of an attempt to tidy up the beginning. Wouldn’t recommend and won’t be re-reading. I’d be curious to read another book written by Kate Morton though.

I usually love Kate Morton’s novels, but with this one there were just too many characters, story lines, and time periods to keep the story straight. It was exhausting trying to make sense of it all. I almost gave up halfway through and by the time I finished it I felt that it had been nothing but a waste of my time.

Overall, the writing was great. There were some fun metaphors and some of the subplots had me hooked.

However, when I finished the book, I could not figure out the point. The ending was disappointing…. There was 600 pages of build up (which could have easily been cut down by 150) for what? For an ending that I would argue that didn’t make sense and still some loose ends.

Kate Morton's sense of place is very hard to come by. She is extraordinary. I cannot think of another author that compares with her in this way. You can feel her love of houses and landscapes with a true passion.

Her words are beautiful and seem to come out of her so naturally, like a flowing river. 4/5

I listened to this on audio, and I can't recommend that method enough. Such a great, winding, sad and tragic but not TOO sad and tragic story. Loved it!

I was taking longer to get hooked because it is in my second language, but also I think I'm looking for something with cozier vibes right now.

Had a hard time getting through this one l. Usually love this author

Had difficulty following the the plot. Found there were too many characters in too many different time periods.
