I usually enjoy KM’s narrative style: the weaving of past and present and the satisfying final tug that pulls it all together. However, I found this story tedious and the ending all together morbid.
I found myself really liking this book; it’s haunting (very intentional word choice.). I felt like it was a little over-ornate and overly mannered, but I appreciated the mysteries and found the characters compelling. An excellent spring break read.
I love Kate Morton's book and while some reviewers expressed some negative points, I liked it. I do agree that there was a sprawling cast of characters, but in the end, she wove everything together and I found it quite satisfying. I found the book quite atmospheric and enjoyed the journey through time. The audiobook edition was perfect.
The start of the book was good, caught up in the mystery and drama. The middle got murky w too many characters, it took me a few chapters to realize there was a ghost. The end brought it all home. I think if there was a hart that laid out the characters it’d be helpful (but give away the story. All in all a pleasing book to read.
I am normally a Kate Morton fan. However, this one wasn’t for me. Way too many characters and too much jumping around in time. I appreciate what she was trying to do. There were lots of interesting parts and themes. I would have enjoyed this as a short story collection where the house ties all of the stories together.

Very Good read! Lots of different stories that are woven together. Kate does an excellent job at having the pieces connected together!
I really struggled with this. If it weren’t Kate Morton, I think I’d have given up on it before 1/2 way. It was not up to snuff. A meagre 2 stars from me.
You know where one feels lots of time has gone by, but is constantly clock watching and really it’d only been a few minutes? I was doing the same with this reading. Certain I’d put in a good effort a read a chunk, only to be dismayed by the fact I’d read only several pages. It dragged.
Also, her writing bothered me in a way it never has; characters were introduced too swiftly and remained grossly underdeveloped. (Morton did, however, use one of my favourite words, twice - detritus - so points for that.)
Underwhelming. Take me back to The Forgotten Garden!
