I love Kate Morton. Unfortunately, this book was just a miss for me. I tend to be a mood reader so I am sure that the problem was with me and not the book. The Lake House and The Forgotten Garden are literary gold.
3.5 stars. I think Kate Morton is a wonderful writer. The story dragged in parts for me.
I'm a big Kate Morton fan anyway, and this book does not disappoint. It took me a long time to get through it because I could only get it on CD and the only CD player I have is in the car (listening interrupted by several trips). Had I been able to listen more regularly, I'm sure I would have loved it more. I would go 4.5 if that were an option, but it's good enough for the bump up rather than down. The story is slow to develop--there are numerous narrative threads that get developed, but the payoff in the end is worth it. The ending is bittersweet--she leaves some threads unresolved, but leaves us with the information to surmise for ourselves where the story lines must go. I'm happy to read more of her work any time!
This is the first book of hers that took forever to finish. So many different storylines and as always they come together, but not clearly. Too many different storylines but still beautifully written. You can see everything she describes and you can imagine the characters. Not horrible but not up to her usual level. I still like her earlier books.
Great read. Bit disappointed with the ending as I tend to like a nice clean finish to a story but the story was great and kept me enthralled!
I listened to the audiobook of this which was narrated by Joanne Froggatt. What an excellent job she did in adding real light to all the characters. I loved how this book weaves throughout time and stories. The focus on Victorian London and the scientific and spiritual discoveries of the era was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed this once i realized the intricate tapestry of it
Not her best. Nor my favourite. Though the story line was interesting, while being a little predictable now. felt very distracted by the jumpy time line. She seemed to have a formula which kinda rehashed in different ways. A couple of interesting quotes.
