emotional mysterious slow-paced

I love Kate Morton, and this was her only book I hadn’t read. Her most recent novel, Homecoming, I really loved.

But this one missed the mark for me. It has the lovely setting & atmospheric mystery of all her books, but the middle was slow, there are too many characters, and I had so many unanswered questions when it ended.

Also, it seems misnamed. It should have been named The House in the River Bend, or Birchwood Manor, or maybe something related to Birdie/Lily that was more relevant to the story than “clockmaker’s daughter”.

Excellent read - I tried to figure out how she became a ghost and finally in the last 1/4 of the book it was explained. Well-written and interesting read.

What a long book to then not get the wrapped up ending I was craving ! I know it was all implied but I was waiting for Elodie to be the one to then put it all together and also what happened with her wedding? I’m a bit disappointed.

This was my first book I read that was written by Kate Morton. I did love her writing style but I found myself somewhat confused by the multiple storylines and unable to care what was happening within the plot. If you can keep track of the story and multiple viewpoints, I’m sure you’d enjoy it. Unfortunately for me, I enjoy a more clear style of writing.

It was good when it was good but then just kinda...ended.

DID NOT FINISH

Too slow and boring after 100 pages

This was my first Kate Morton book. At first a little confusing keeping the different storylines straight, but I thought she did a great job making each character dynamic and well-rounded, so it was worth the effort of keeping up with all of them. I got so attached to all the narrators. Loved getting to see British culture peek through this story. The book had a slow build and was one that I enjoyed reading at a slower pace, but the plot moved quickly. I loved how things came together at the end. Really enjoyed the mysterious and elegant mood of this story.

I was left underwhelmed by the ending - loved it until then

The Clockmaker's Daughter - Review:

My Rating: 5/5*
Method of Engagement: Book & Audible | 17.3 hrs | Narrated by Joanne Froggatt

This is the first book that I have read by Kate Morton and what an absolute delight it was to read, as well as listen to on audible.

Brief Overview:
There are multiple POV's presented within this book. The several main characters are from different timelines who are all linked by a specific place - Birchwood Manor. This link is created due to a mysterious event, which causes something to be tethered to the Manor (paranormal vibes). This impacts the stories of those who visit the home, as they all play a part in uncovering the secret/s and revealing the tragedy from the past.

Audiobook Considerations:
The narrator of the audiobook, Joanne Froggatt, masterfully creates a variety of voices for all the characters throughout the story (and there are a lot of of them). Admittedly, it did take me some time to adjust to how many characters there were (especially at the beginning of it). Thankfully though, the pacing is well-considered. The slow-ish start did enable me to become better acquainted with the characters, which allowed further progress of the story to become more enjoyable.

My Thoughts:
The writing is beautiful! I genuinely felt as though I had been transported to the different places and time periods described in the book. I don’t believe I’ve read anything like this before, and am thoroughly impressed by the way in which this book has been written. I will say that it requires a lot of concentration due to the shifting timelines, but I did not find this to be a problem once I got into a reading rhythm.

Overall, the story's journey was extremely engaging, full of suspense and mystery. By the time I got to the end it felt bittersweet. I could have easily read/ listened to more. I highly recommend this book to people who like historical fiction, cozy mysteries (paranormal mysteries), multiple timelines, and twist endings. This is my standout book for 2023 so far, I LOVED it and will definitely continue to read more of Morton's works in the future.
