I'm still deciding about this book. The story within it was excellent but the lack of closure of any sort has me feeling a bit discontented.
I have loved every Kate Morton book that I read, until this one. I think it had too many timelines and it was hard to keep the characters straight when the author was trying to create links between them. The links felt forced. I did like how everything became clear at the end, but it was tough to get there and very slow moving.
I marked a finish date not because I actually finished it but because this is the day I gave up. I’m listening to it and it’s a nearly 18 hour listen. I’m ten hours in, completely confused and have no idea who is who or why. I just can’t bear to give eight more hours of my life listening to this muddled mess. And I’m sad. I really wanted to like it.
Horribly painfully slow. If I had t been listening on audio I would have given up 50 pages in and not wasted 2 weeks listening to it

This book is told from multiple perspectives and it is often unclear who is speaking and what is going on. I usually do well piecing things together like that but this was too much. I got my edition from the library and there were so many spelling and grammar mistakes that you could tell were not stylistic. I think the concept was intriguing but the execution was less so.
I decided to give Kate Morton another shot, and I'm glad I did, because this was great.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. I had never read anything by the author, but I loved her writing. The way she describes the house and London though its different times was so vivid and clear. I loved the way we accompany different characters and times, and how it all plays together in the end so perfectly. Like putting the final piece of the puzzle and watching the image come together. For myself, the measure of a good book is when the story or the characters linger with you, after you have finished reading. Some books just stay with you in a way that puts you off starting a new story, as you are not quite done absorbing all you read. And this one is definitely that, I finished it almost two days ago and I still find myself in that world when I'm still. (I don't know if anyone feels the same way, but for me it is definitely real.)
