Time dissolved every time I opened this book, I’d constantly find myself checking the time and being surprised how much had gone by because this book is that captivating

how am I supposed to repair my broken heart after this?

New York Times Review classic A new translation of a contemporary classic from a Hungarian writer. Deceptively complex and stunning.

Such a rare jewel! This book has everything - wit, substance and charm.
Our imposing character, the eccentric maid, takes on mythological proportions. A reader will find himself pendulating between admiration for the fantastical creature and the magistral force of writing and persuasion of an unreliable narrator. The story that is told follows wonders which to other characters seem to incomprehensible.
slow-paced

When the editors of the New York Times cull their long list of books to shape their annual best of the year list, the so-called Editor's Choice list, they usually do so only from the books that were published in the preceding year. The occasional exception is for collected short stories or essays that are in their cumulative importance significant enough. The other, and this is the case for the 2007 Hungarian novel The Door, is a work in a language other than English that is finally translated and published in the US market. This book, by an author unknown to me until now, Magda Szabo, not only deserves inclusion in the most recent NYTIMES list for 2015, but is one of the better novels I've read in the last few years.

I might be biased as a Hungarian but
if my reading experience of 24 years taught me anything it's soul crushingly crying for minutes at a story means it moved something in you
The two women in this book are a mirror to generations of women in my family and the thought of us experiencing this lifetime with each other and still alone just shattered me to pieces

brb, gonna go and make my mom read this so we can cry together
