Saga Volume 1

Brian K. Vaughan

4.35 AVERAGE

Did Brian K Vaughan really write on Lost? Because his storytelling with Y: The Last Man and more recently here with Saga is exponentially more inspired. Good art by Fiona Staples, too; her roughly hewn lines underline the sense of a universe just barely held together. Nice one. Roll on Volume 2!

This was my first time reading a space opera, as well as a graphic novel. And let me tell you- it did not disappoint!! This series reminds me of Firefly meets The Book of Eli, with a little bit of Marissa Meyer’s “Cinder” thrown in. I loved every second and can’t wait to read volume 2!

First read, July 21-22 2015: So, this is just as good as everyone says it is. The art is TREMENDOUS. It is exactly how I like it. Simple and sketchy, without being sloppy. The art gets five stars.

I've only just read it and I keep thinking about it. Likeable, interesting characters. Fingies crossed that my library system has the subsequent books . . .

Second read, October 22-24 2015: I bought the second volume, so I read this one again to review and because I own the damn thing so may as well get my money's worth, right? Still amazing. Recommended to all.

Third read, October 2-3 2018: Bumping this baby up to 5 stars, because I'm too stingy with 5-star ratings.

Picked this up because of the hype (even if I am late), and it did not disappoint!

What I liked
The plot. This is fast paced and action packed!

The characters. So many distinct characters- both the main characters and the side characters. They're funny and you really get attached to their stories and motivations.

The world. This world is so fleshed out and diverse. I love the wide variety of species we have- from people with wings or horns to robots with TVs for faces. Very interesting! I cannot wait to see more of what this universe has to offer.

The art. So beautiful and vibrant!

What I didn't like
Confusing alliances. This follows a war, and we follow characters from both alliances. Sometimes when reading this, it is difficult to remember who is on who's side. Not a big complaint, but can be a little confusing at times.

Explicit. Not a big complaint, but definitely something you should be aware of going into this. From explicit sex scenes to topics such as sex trafficking, this can be hard to read for some people. Look up content warnings before going in if you think there might be something that may upset you.

Overall, I am excited to carry on with this series! Definitely worth the hype. On to vol.2!

Romeo & Juliet didn't commit suicide. They started a family and went on the run.
And also they were both alien soldiers fighting on opposite sides of an interplanetary war that is both hot & cold as it engulfs other planets, cultures, & lives.
And they're being hunted by government agents, mercenaries, crooks, in-laws, & ex-girlfriends, all of a variety of species and their own tragic side stories.
And science and magic both exist side by side.
And love, man. LOVE.

This was a fun read! Compelling characters, an interesting world, and gorgeous art.

Wasn't sure about this over the first 8 pages but it drew me in rapidly, solid story line, wonderful creatures and nice layers of storytelling have absorbed me.

From first frame to last, this was an amazing comic. Fascinating worlds, gorgeous artwork, snappy dialogue, intriguing plot layers. Can't wait for more!

Well, this was my first comic for grown-ups, or whatever you want to call it, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I read it all within about an hour which surprised me. It's not very long. I thought the art was fine, definitely skilled but didn't grab me like "whoa, this is drawn so well, amazing". I guess I felt a bit let down overall, after all the hype. It was fun, and funny in some parts. The writing seemed good, the characters were enjoyable. I'm really not sure how to rate this, though, because after all that I felt like it was enjoyable but kind of slight, and unsatisfying. Like eating a McDonald's cheeseburger, it was yum but there wasn't much nourishment in it, and I'm still hungry. Maybe I should've just read more of it at once?
