Saga (Vol. 1) di Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples è il primo volume della Maxi Serie di Saga (prevista per 18 volumi). Saga come opera è un gioiello: disegni, temi trattati, ritmo, dialoghi, metafore e tutto perfetto.
OK mi sto sbilanciando avendo letto solo i primi 9 volumi (che è la prima “stagione” dopo la quale gli autori hanno preso una pausa) ma il livello è così alto, che azzardo nel considerare anche i numeri non ancora usciti all’altezza di quelli già usciti.
Di cosa parla in breve: Due razze di due pianeti diversi (una con le corna, una le ali da fata) sono in guerra e si odiano… Quando due appartenenti a questi pianeti si innamorano e danno alla luce una bambina diventeranno dei ricercati da tutti.

Se l’incipit è super classico è il modo in cui la storia evolve, si sviluppa, vengono introdotti personaggi e il modo in cui questi interagiscono che eleva tutto a un altro livello.
Se come me non avete quasi più fiducia nella qualità dei “comics” americani dopo l’appiattimento degli ultimi 20 anni :-|, questa serie vi farà ritrovare la speranza, sto pensando di ricomprarla anche in Italiano così da poterla fare leggere ai miei bambini.

My second time reading Saga and it's just as fun as the first time. I'm currently reading the new issues and you pick up on so much going through the beginning again. I waited 3 years for this to come back!

I can see why this gets the praise and popularity that it does.
But it was just kinda meh for me.
Like there were parts I really liked, like how they commented on the devastation of war and what it does to everyone in its orbit.
The good, the bad, and most of all the very ugly.
But all the sex, sex, sex of the story felt kinda boring to me and filler.

I'm torn about this one. I really like the artwork and I also sorta like the humorous voice of the narrator, but I just can't get over certain elements of the plot that make absolutely no sense to me. Like, why would anybody in his right mind send a Prince to hunt two completely unimportant deserters? Why would anybody in their right minds hire a bunch of Freelancers and spend ridiculous amounts of money to also hunt down deserters? Apparently this has something to do with the baby - which we are told (by the narrator herself, aka the baby) is neither important nor a saviour. So, again, why? And, then, the most baffling question of all: why would somebody think that the natural thing a man would want to do after being dumped by a "strong" woman would be to molest a child? Enter the cliche of the Freelancer (bounty hunter/assassin, I take that to mean) who can without remorse kill children and even newly born babies but pedophiles he draws a line at and is morally compelled to rid the world of them. I mean, come on. Also, wood is used in the construction of spaceships, even though it would totally burn and be destroyed when it hit the atmosphere of any planet fit for people to inhabit it. Aaand Marko's mother was waiting stand-by to track him at all times and teleported in his wooden spaceship. If his race can teleport, why didn't he just do that? And Prince Robot implies that it would be harder for him, a Prince, to find trasport than it would be for two fugitives. And he somehow makes the leap of thought that the first place these fugitives would go to will be the planet where their favourite author lives. 'Cause, yeah, that makes sense.
So, yes, a lot of convenient plot devices.

This is an excellent start to what looks like will be an epic space opera, with lots of interesting alien characters playing out their destinies in a galactic war. The story combines science fiction with fantasy and magic elements (or at least sufficiently advanced science that looks like magic). If Saga doesn't get nominated for a Graphic Story Hugo Award, there is no justice.
