This is an excellent start to what looks like will be an epic space opera, with lots of interesting alien characters playing out their destinies in a galactic war. The story combines science fiction with fantasy and magic elements (or at least sufficiently advanced science that looks like magic). If Saga doesn't get nominated for a Graphic Story Hugo Award, there is no justice.

Again, 3.5 stars. It was intriguing but mildly disappointing to me given the hype. I do appreciate the cool female characters and the deliberate bucking of expectations. However, the only character I REALLY liked was Izabel...

...but since it looked like she might have died at the end of this one, I skimmed straight to Sagas 2 and then I had to skim 3 before going back and finishing this one properly...

...so I know that the ratings for the next ones will be much higher. And that many more characters will grow on me.

This is the first graphic novel I entirely enjoyed, from storytelling to art. (Ok, I loved Lumberjanes, too, but it has a completely different tone, storytelling and style.) I love the colours, the drawings as such and the story with the well used love-against-all-odds trope. I have already picked up the second volume.
I loved it so much I finished it in one setting. The library has the 3rd & 4th ones in and I've placed a hold on them, and if the 2nd one doesn't come in before I go on vacation I'm buying it.
It's graphic and weird and explicit and horrible and beautiful, so if that's not your thing, don't read it.

I loved this first volume, the art work is terrific and the dialogue makes this story sparkle.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel and have already rushed to put myself on the hold list at the local library for the second Volume. It is graphic in violence and sex...and language. Still, the story sucked me in and I want to see where it goes. the artwork is to my taste as well which is a bonus. It is similar to style of American Vampire or Walking Dead...a style I really enjoy. All around a great graphic novel.
So, I read this in the span of an hour because I didn't want to start something long. But it was a really, really good hour.
