a memoir of the author's high school years that tell the story of a young 80's romance. Its an absolutely wonderful read and a tear jerker at times. This is the first book I've read by Philippe Besson, but it won't be the last

Captivating prose and absolutely heart wrenching story of a secret first love. I hadn’t expected to tear up while reading this. Though it was relatively short, it still took me a week to finish.

The first few pages I struggled reading past and I was not sure i would finish, but i came back to read more and ended up loving the book and the tragic ending, The lost first love Philippe will never forget about. (Can't wait to see the movie!)

The writing in this book is absolutely beautiful. This is a wonderful portrait of a first love's imprint on you, a look on youth, self-shame and longing. It invites you to think about the passage of time, and when it ends, you're left with a heavy feeling that you can't quite put your finger on.

"I say: is that the reason you said something of the foreigner?
He says: Yes, dark eyes, olive skin. And the feeling of never quite belonging, of being a person uprooted, as if, maybe, who knows, a sense of not belonging is something one inherits."
