This novel does not measure up to the thematic complexity and masterful prose I expect from Anne Rice, but it's still good. There is still the familiar theme of past morality versus current progress. I just wanted some of the characters to be better developed. And some of the romance to be less pedestrian. But overall this is fun. Reading Anne Rice's poetic descriptions of the ancient world in earlier novels just made me expect more from this.
I don't remember Julie crying and fainting so much - nor turning so emo at the end - the first time I read this. Still, one of the few romantic books I've ever liked, and that hasn't changed.
Such a comfort read. I've read this maybe a dozen times over the years and I'll probably read it a dozen more.

This book was not for me. It was slow and repetitive. I didn't like most of the characters. There were to many character perspectives. It felt long and drawn out. It was predictable. But it's getting two and a half stars because something kept me drawn in. I was still invested. I really liked the setting of the story. And I liked the concept of explaining the "modern world" to someone ancient.
I can see why they changed the entire plot for the movie >_>
When the Mummy wasn't horny for what's her face, he was lusting after the corpse of his beloved.

I first read this some 25 years ago during my Anne Rice phase, and with her passing, I thought it was time to revisit a favorite of mine.
It did not disappoint. The tale is as well-woven for me as an adult author as it was for me as a teenager. The characters are so well fleshed-out, and the story has all sorts of twists and turns but wraps up in a convenient but satisfying way. I still stayed up too late to finish it, just like the first time, and was delighted to find I didn't remember the second half of it. New to me! And the cliffhanger it ends with finally has its follow-up a whole lifetime later! The romance is definitely not as forward or *lurid* as I remember it being

Tried to read this in 2004:
Boring, no character interest. Actually, I didn't even finish it.

I went back and forth on whether I liked this or not. First, let me be honest and say I have not read an Anne Rice book since college. ( A few years ago!) Next, this was not as graphic as I remember, thank goodness.
The development of Ramses' character was fine as it went, but I was hoping for more. Like the book ended before we really got to know all of him.
Spoiler - got rid of an annoying character before he *really* got on my nerves. He didn't do much for the story anyway.
What I was waiting for was Ramses and Cleopatra to have a deep talk about why each did what they did. Mostly, they spent their time trying to stay away from each other. Disappointing. Not that I wanted them to end up together, but I wanted more interaction.
The character I really liked was Elliott. Kept finding out new things about him. Could have written about just him and I'd have been fine!
All in all, not bad. But for a bunch of undeads, I was hoping for more.
