reading this again after nearly 7 yrs does change my perception quite a bit..somehow the visuals are clearer this time, and def helped by the fact that ive actually lived in the city thats actually the book's setting during the interim--and ig more 'living' has made me look at this in a more complex way. it's still depressing, but also mixed w/ pity and resentful acceptance.

the book's world mirrors our own, and it's a pathetic, materialistic, money- and power-obsessed one, thus somehow someone as unbelievably, almost stupidly hopeful as gatsby seems to be the madman in the story, tho he's also risen so high up bc he became part of the mad world so completely. and while i absolutely despised daisy the first time, now my anger and frustration are reserved for literally everyone; they all fucked up in some way, but the men more so than others though there's a lot of intersectionality at play as well. the characters are a bunch of lying, stupid, selfish, shallow, silent fools, but they were an entertaining, disgusting bunch who reaffirms the mess of the world nevertheless.

I’ve read this book at some point when I was still in school, though as private reading and not part of the curriculum, and I remember loving it. Rereading has not diminished any of the joy/entertainment this story gave.
This is a book I would’ve loved to read in a class setting and analyze it in a deeper and academic way. This way I had to laugh about all the foreshadowing of
the car crash and Gatsby ending up dead in the pool
all on my own.

I wanted to give this book two stars. It was so stupid yet entertaining that I decided to give it three stars just because the shallowness of the characters made me laugh throughout the book.

I loved reading this book. The novel is most notable for its description of the roaring 20s, but the story is just as amazing. It's romantic, sad, and thought-provoking. It truly deserves to be a classic. My only criticism is that Jordan and Nick's relationship felt a bit unfinished. However, it seems as it was the author's intent.

I had to read this book for school. For a school book 4/5 stars. My actual rating? 2/5 because the characters are sexist, racist, and I hate most of them. The writing is beautiful, and I can see the beauty in that which is why I gave it two stars.
