Yes, the cover caught me, and also the Book Smugglers' review. This is a great entertaining read. I loved the character of Maggie, with her sassy attitude and voice, but I even preferred her relationship with her mother Janice. Brilliant partnership! And the issue of sex and nudity was also very well treated, without any prejudice. Wish I had had this book when I was a teenager...
The real criticism I have of this is that it uses a number of derogatory terms for sex-workers and is very sex-worker negative (i.e. using the idea of "looking like a sex worker" as an insult. Which is a shame in an otherwise very positive book.
Written from the POV of a 17 year old girl so maybe for older readers it may take a few pages to settle in to. But honestly once I let me inner 17 yr old out I enjoyed it thoroughly reading through it in basically one night. It's the awesome self confident oddly realistic 17 yr old I'd aspire to have been!
Good on body positivity - I actually like that it approaches it from a position of insecurity and gaining acceptance. It's relatable.
Does contain sex scenes which are somehow very clear but also not graphic, largely due to being written through the eyes of a 17yr old girl. Honestly the various euphemisms used are way easier to stomach than the bizarre attempts at sexy that a lot of erotica writers use.
Excellent fun. Good monsters. I would happily read more in this series when I want some good trashy YA horror.

I didn’t give a lot of stars only because it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting—but that’s on me, not the book. I can see why some people don’t like the book but I think they’re missing a big piece of what makes it great. Usually slangy prose is annoying, like the author is trying to be cool or funny and it falls flat. But the reader should remember it’s the first person POV, not a narrator. And as far as keeping a unique consistent character voice, this is a triumph. It’s not like a one-off line—it’s how Maggie talks and thinks. It’s well done and consistent. It’s actually quite a clever device to remind the reader of her social status as a hunter. The characters were fun but I kinda wanted more or maybe a sequel.
For someone who likes Supernatural, it's very similar to the show. There are a little of funny moments. Maggie has a sarcastic attitude (which I strongly identify with). There were a few spelling/grammar errors, lots of cussing and smut (not a problem for me but maybe for others). It did resemble Supernatural fan fiction (instead of Sam and Dean it's Jo and Ellen) but hey! A lot of books started off as fan fiction so I can't complain.
This was a super fun read. Maggie is the best foul-mouthed, snarky teenage protagonist you could ask for. If you like Grady Hendrix or A. Lee Martinez, then you'll probably like this one.
Life has sucked BIG TIME this week, and so over a week after finishing this buddy read with the lovely Sarah I still haven't had the time to write a proper review 😭
The Awesome was laugh-out-loud funny in an improper sort of way (think Bridesmaids type of humour), it was cute and it was interesting, but unfortunately it was also rushed, a bit cliched and left a lot of questions unanswered, which makes me hope that there will be a second book because I need to know I wish I could review this in more detail but I'm a rush and anyway Sarah said it better in her awesome review (pun intended) so go read it here! 😊
Very recommended when in need of a light read and a quick laugh.

what Jeff told bad vampire dude to make him back off like that!!Very recommended when in need of a light read and a quick laugh.
This was fun! A super-fast read with a great (profanity-laden) voice. Maggie is real and funny and her confidence in her worth and her close relationships was refreshing. I was particularly pleased with her boyfriend, Ian, who was not only totally hot but also an actual person who cared about Maggie in subtle, real ways that I think girls need to see in books.
I liked The Awesome despite at least 3 gross typos / copyediting errors and a general sense that many sections needed an edit (the voice is great, but someone needed to red pen the sections where the author got too carried away with Maggie's cleverness, to the detriment of forward movement). But overall, this was fast, fun, sexy, and violent without sacrificing real heart.

Someone recommended this online - said that despite the cover this was worth reading. I agree wit them. The cover is awful, but the story is entertaining. The main character is excellently badass, and the minor characters are well developed. I particularly like Lauren, and I'm hoping there are more books to come expanding the stories of some of the minor characters.
This book is very funny, but I don't know that I would let my kid read it if I had one....
Seventeen-year-old Maggie Cunningham loves her job and her mom, Janice. They are licensed Monster Hunters. They hunt down rogue ghouls, ghosts, golems, vampires and zombies according to the rules and regulations set by the agency Department of Paranormal Relations (DoPR). (All monsters are supposed to register with the DoPR and refrain from violent behavior. If they refuse, they are rated one to five stars according to their danger to society, and hunters are paid on scale.)
Maggie has been working with her mom since she was 13. However, because Maggie is a virgin, she is still an apprentice. Once she has taken care of this little problem, she can be promoted. (Her virginal state makes her irresistible to young vampires.) Since she spends all of her time working with her mom and is home-schooled, meeting boys is not easy. Fortunately, she still is friends with one girl her age, Julie, whom she met in junior high.
Excerpted from the book:
"Mom wandered into the other room with her phone. I listened to her hash out the details of that night's job with Allie, all the while stealing misery-inducing gulps of her coffee. I was far too lazy to get the sugar from the kitchen. It was a whole ten feet away, and my chair was too comfortable to vacate. Instead I suffered through bitter crap-in-a-cup, working myself into a snit when Mom talked about cool stuff like crossbows and silver bullets."
""This sucks.""
"Not wanting to sit at home brooding about the life-threatening fun fest I couldn't attend, I picked up my burner phone, one of those jobbies you bought at 7-11 with prepaid minutes, and called my old friend Julie. Who was I kidding? She was my only friend. But one friend was better than no friends or so I told myself. I wasn't telling Mom this, nor would I tell Julie, but if I could sucker an invite into Julie's plans, I was on a mission. I, Margaret Cunningham, would try my hand at being a slutbag.
Because ready or not, Maggie needed a promotion."
Unbeknownst to Maggie, in a few days, a vampire will have both Maggie and her Mom in his sights. She will need every lesson Janice has taught her....
