I hate giving a low star for this book. I listened to the audio book and had hard time pushing through. I am going to try the next one to see if gets any better.
This was so much worse than I had anticipated. I initially wrote off the "it's basically Lord of the Rings" critiques as Tolkien-fanboy hate. But no, it's beat-for-beat LOTR, except that it's worse in every single way. Brooks' writing doesn't do him any favors as he constantly over-explains characters' emotions and story developments to the point of redundancy. He also writes characters that respond to every situation with the most extreme emotions possible — it's like watching someone over-act. The book had one interesting idea ("what if fantasy races were all men who evolved differently in a post-apocalyptic earth?"), but Brooks never does anything interesting with that setup. Instead, the gnome men and troll men(?) (I can't remember whether the trolls were supposed to be men or not) just fill the role of "faceless, evil, mindless army that good guys get to hammer."
I'm still kind of amazed that I finished this...I've never had to exert so much willpower to keep listening to a story. Maybe one day I'll learn to DNF books.

Entertaining story. Most of the characters get well described, none are that deep. I've noticed that with Terry Brooks and audiobooks I have to go back and relisten to the action parts because a lot happens in a short period of time.

I still enjoyed this book but it is really derivative of LOTR. Probably enjoyed the writing style more than LOTR but I am biased as I love Elfstones, Wishsong, Heritage and Voyage. In those the world is more distinct and are all fantastic
