Silly, fun, light hearted! Everything I’m looking for in a palette cleanser. First by Emma Lord that I’ve read but reminded me of some of my faves (i.e. Sarah Adams my ultimate comfort read author)
As a fan of Emma Lord's writing, especially The Getaway List, I was so excited to dive into For the Record—and it absolutely delivered! With witty banter and a heartwarming sense of found family, this rock star romance is a sizzling slow burn and packed with emotion and spice.
The dual point-of-view takes you along for the ride, with a strong dose of will they/won't they elements as this rivals-to-lovers and second-chance romance unfolds. The story also explores themes of rediscovering love through music, navigating the rocky challenges of fame, and family issues. It reads just like a rock-infused romance movie, complete with a rollercoaster of emotions. What I especially loved was the connection and emotion through music. The details are so vivid, you can practically picture the scenes and feel the passion as the characters perform and connect.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press | St. Martin's Griffin, You Had Me at HEA, NetGalley, and Emma Lord for the advanced reader copy and the opportunity to read this book!
A perfect read for fans of:

Honestly, I just couldn’t super get into this. Like, I was reading it but not absorbing it. I didn’t really connect to either Mackenzie or Sam, and I felt like there was so much backstory I was missing and never fully got caught up on, especially with Hannah and Serena.
Candy Shard and Thunder Hearts were semi rival bands a few years ago, except one was a punk band and one was a girl group? So like, that doesn’t make a ton of sense to me. And also, I do genuinely hate both of those band names (sorry). Until they both inexplicably broke up at almost the same time. And now Mackenzie and Sam are reuniting after they had this major blow up 2 years ago…that wasn’t really a blow up.
I don’t know, the story kind of felt all over the place to me and just didn’t make a lot of sense. I liked the sticking it to the man with Tick Tune stuff but everything else was kind of meh.
I didn’t feel connected to either of the main characters and this story didn’t really capture or keep my attention. They just felt too surface level for me and I wish they were a bit more fleshed out. It’s already hard to empathize with two famous stars, and I was kind of just rolling my eyes at Mackenzie.
I liked the story overall and how Mackenzie was working to sort of come back after her vocal surgery, but even that kind of felt like it was glossed over by the end.

“We’ll write a thousand songs trying to capture this”
- you are in love by taylor swift you finally have a story
I LOVED this !
anytime i find a book that even halfway reminds me of daisy jones vibes I have to read it , this was nothing like what I thought it would be. I meant I went in mostly blind and it was everything and more .
The romance , the pining , the songs .
There were a few things I didn’t like - long chapters and tick tune.. oh please name it something different that doesn’t sound like tiktok.
But push through the long chapters because the story is amazing

For the Record is a cute read. I love a romance novel with main characters in bands, but the band names for both were lacklustre… especially for Sam. The story itself was good. I enjoyed the Tick Tune aspect of it mostly because it reflects something that does happen in the music industry. I love how the characters all rallied together for the cause (no spoilers). I really felt that energy!
As for the romance side… it was good. I think the banter could have been better. A lot of their interactions felt more like lust than genuine attraction (though I’m currently watching trash tv’s the Perfect Match so maybe it’s skewing my views). Mackenzie’s inner dialogue was somewhat annoying 😅 especially with the audiobook.
All in all, this was a good read. It wasn’t anything absolutely thrilling, but I still enjoyed it.

Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of For The Record! I give this book 3 stars. The idea of For The Record is very cute. I feel like 2 young rival pop stars who get a second chance to come together in a more mature way later on in their careers makes for an intriguing story.
I give this book 3 stars because I do feel like the characters overall were very surface level. I didn’t feel emotionally connected to any one in particular the whole time. I appreciate their attempt to overcome their past selves, but just never felt like we got to understand what the past truly was for them.
The romance also seemed to happen all at once which was almost confusing. It was easy to get on track once it started but I do believe it had an abrupt start.
Overall, I would recommend for anyone looking for a light contemporary romance read. But if you want more substance this may not be the read for you.

For The Record is a novel centering around two musicians. It reminded me of Daisy Jones and the Six because of this. There are conflicts centering around the changing landscape of music, social media and music streaming rights of musicians. This is a YA book with a second chance romance and a dual point of view. The MMC's narrator had a perfect voice for this story and overall the audio was easy to listen to and flowed well. The characters were well developed and the plot had some slower parts but nothing that you couldn't push through.
Thank you Net Galley, Emma Lord and MacMillian Audio for the opportunity to preview this title. The opinions shared are my own.

I thought it was really cute! I’ve read every Emma Lord book since Tweet Cute and her writing style makes you not want to put the book down. She is so good at tension which peons my comes from her YA background and honestly I stand by the opinion that well written tension is usually better than a bunch of spicy scenes.
Oh I also give her credit for writing a musician book without having to write really any song lyrics. I can only think of one moment with actually lyrics they wrote instead of just the vibe of the feelings in the song. Song lyrics in books never work for me since I don’t know what it should song like/sometimes they just feel like they would not actually work in a song so a win for me here lol.
