Martin Short worte a amazing book :)

4.5 Stars. Trust the other reviews when they tell you to find the audiobook version of this and listen to that instead. Short’s retelling of his experiences are great in the written form but his own narration of said experiences in the audiobook is second to none. Hilarious and heartwarming in equal measure.

Recommended by the Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast, and for good reason. More self-reflective than self-indulgent, with some genuinely funny moments interspersed with some genuinely sad ones.

I listened to this on Audible, and I can't imagine having read this any other way. Having Martin's impressions and inflection truly enhanced what would have otherwise been a less impactful read.

I honestly enjoyed the end of the book the most, though there was quite a bit to learn about Short's life overall. His notes about loss, grief, and moving forward may have been the most impactful for me. He certainly has the "happy gene" as he refers to it, which reminded me of something I heard Carrie Fisher once say which was "it's not what we're given, it's how we take it."

What an amazing autobiography from one of my favorite entertainers, actors, comedians - he truly is a star. Also, he the audiobook was a delight, but could you expect anything less? Can’t wait to see him and Steve Martin live onstage this summer :’)

I didn’t expect to cry listening to Martin Short’s audiobook. Definitely listen to the audiobook, it’s worth it for all the voices.

I enjoyed learning about the friendships of these comedy legends like Steve Martin, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Dave Thomas, Nora Ephron, etc. and how they got their starts. I also didn’t realize how much heartbreak Short had experienced. One of his older brother’s died when Short was 12, his mother when his was 17, and his dad when he was 20. Then his wife died when they were in their 50s. Those stories were authentic and touching. However, his ego is immense and the name dropping for the sake of name dropping was tiresome (like the George Harrison story). I also realized that I don’t like Martin Short’s comedy in and of itself. I only think he’s funny when he’s playing off someone else like Steve Martin. Finished this book liking Martin Short and his comedy less than when I started. Wouldn’t recommend.
funny hopeful inspiring slow-paced

Martin Short has been a part of my subconscious since birth... So has well most of the cast of SCTV. Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara get a personal shout-out thanks to Schitt's Creek.

Nevertheless, Martin Short is that classmate you never remember until you run into them at a bar and then all the memories flood back. You may just want to punch him or just buy him a shot. His autobiography conjured some hilarious moments alongside poignant ones. I'm glad to see him thriving lately thankfully :)

Listened to the audiobook, read by Short himself. Incredibly surprising story, and worthy of a 4.5, if I could give it that.

I listened to it as an audiobook, and it was both hilarious and heartbreaking.
