I had a hard time with the beginning of this book not gonna lie. I had put it down and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pick it back up again until my friends said “once you get passed 30% it picks right up” and it’s true! There’s a lot of details and a lot of world building in the first 30% that is needed and it might be hard to get through but once you do it’s soooo worth it!!!
There were a couple plot twist that had me going “WAIT WHAT?!” it’s a really good book once you get past the 30% mark. I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to start the 2nd book!

This book was messy, and it’s exactly what I needed.
Fantasy romance is usually not my jam, however, I love Ella’s writing and this book was no exception to that. The moment I started reading I was sucked into this magical world and I never wanted to leave.
Queen Audra is ruling her kingdom alone. Her parents are dead and her husband is a traitor. She is ruling with a cruel, cold heart these days. Audra learns her husband is set to marry another woman, so she kidnaps him and keeps him in her dungeon until he remembers everything he did. Can a queen with a cold heart also find herself?
I loved Audra, despite her coldness you could feel there is something more to her. She used her coldness to protect her heart. When she was telling Raiden of the former life together my heart was breaking. I honestly loved those two together so much. There is so much chemistry between the two. Zad, well he has been in Audra’s life for a long time, there are times she questions him and there were times that I was questioning him and trying to decide if I should like him or not. Though, towards the end I was leaning more towards the liking him side of things.
Even if fantasy romance isn’t your thing, you will still enjoy this story. There are plenty of fantasy elements to the story, but there is plenty of other romance elements. It is the perfect balance of the two.
Ella created a magical, fairytale world that is captivating and beautiful. Fall in love with these characters, this story and this world. A King So Cruel is a MUST READ!

I've never really been a fantasy reader. I've tried and failed multiple times because it's hard for me to retain all the unusual names, places, creatures, etc. When I found out my unicorn, Ella Fields, was going to write a fantasy I just thought, HELL YEAH. Everything she writes is pure gold and I knew A King So Cold would be no different.
Because of the reasons why I don't read fantasy, it took me a bit to get into this one. I also had to reread some passages to get things straight, but I got HOOKED.
I honestly loved the characters, the action, the romance, the drama. It physically hurt to have to put this book down to do "life" things. It also had the classic Ella mixed in where you can tell she wrote this beauty. Especially if you were to see everything I highlighted and bookmarked (most of the book). Ella proves she can write just about anything and I will DEVOUR it. Every. Time.

Beginning slow, but gets better
I was almost not going to finish this book because the beginning seemed to drag on... but I'm glad I did because it got better. It did end on a cliff hanger, but the next book is out.. so hopefully that one lives up to this one.

Nothing went as I expected, though I didn’t know much before I started reading. It was fast-paced, which kept me interested but also a little too fast-paced. Sometimes I reread entire paragraphs and still didn’t quite understand what was happening. A lot of things happened in this book, and I felt like neither the characters or I had enough time to digest all of it. I debated giving this 4 stars because I really enjoyed the beginning, but as we got to the second half, I just felt like I didn’t enjoy it as much as I could have. I really wanted to love this one, but sadly I think it could have been better.
“I think that was the first time I’d ever experienced what it was to fall while still standing. To move when not moving at all. To cease breathing when your lungs continued to circulate air.”
I’m going to be honest, it took me a while to get into this book. I tried reading it last year and only got to chapter 7, it had been sitting in my “currently reading” shelf until I decided to give it another go last week. I restarted it and was kind of surprised that once I pushed through the first bit and got into the story, it really did not take the turn I thought it would. I had to push through the first 1/3 of the book before it started to hook me, but once it did, man….this book. So good. I finished this book and immediately started the second one.
The main issue for me while reading was connecting with the MC. It took me a while to start connecting with her, as I felt she was mostly just petty, childish and cruel without much reason. I had to get through a decent amount of the book before I started seeing sides of her that I liked. There’s still times where I find her to be petty and childish, but watching her change through the book and grow up a bit while still managing to be a ruthless bitch made me grow to like her in the end. I also love the name Audra

I enjoyed the book but I definitely struggled with feeling as if I had to read and reread sections just to grasp what the author was saying.
The characters felt a bit shallow to me and world building definitely needs some work. I loved how the author threw us right into the book and definitely got the SJM vibes but it was lacking some development.

I expected another cheesy romance but actually this surprised me and packed a lot of action in! Of course the plot is heavy romance based but a lot of shenanigans happen that play with your emotions.
