I've never read a true fantasy or historical book, but I have loved all of Ella's books so
I thought "Why not?".
Well, that ended up with me adding a "fantasy" shelf to my Goodreads. :) Because I think I might need to read more of these.
The things I like about this trope is that these people can do whatever they want, even if it's not socially acceptable and it's OK. For those of us that love forbidden romance, it's awesome.
Now, this story. It's full of angst and suspense. Murder, revenge, Mayhem. Double-crossing. I was not too fond of any of the characters in the beginning, but either they changed my mind, or they changed as time went on because I liked most of them by the end. I loved the Shakespearean type dialogue between the characters. Audra blew my mind away with her sharp tongue, quick wit and bravery. What an amazing heroine! The romance part was something that I was not expecting and pleasantly surprised. (don't want to spoil any of it)
This is a book that I will never forget.

decent for awhile but it all became very convoluted in the last quarter.
good twists but also there was like 2 likable characters and they weren’t even the main characters

This book took me nearly 2 years to read. Which I feel like speaks for itself. The start of the book was slow, the characters were all morally grey and I wasn't sure who I was supposed to like. I found the book difficult to get into because the characters were all unlikeable. The second half of the book as more enjoyable but not enough to make up for the very slow start.
What I really freaking loved about this book was I never knew exactly where it was going.
Based on the synopsis, I expected the entire book to be about the queen restoring the king’s memories. I was so unbelievably wrong and I AM SO PLEASED ABOUT IT. It took me on this journey where I couldn’t decide if I was going to board any ships, then wondered how my 40% Slytherin nature was ever going to get past certain issues, then questioned if I had accidentally stumbled upon my first ever reverse harem, then googled “reverse harem” and realized I’m an idiot because lol no, then only got four hours of sleep three days in a row because idgaf if I’m working long hours with zero time to read—I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.
I’m a sucker for any book that involves the existence of mating bonds/mating bond equivalent. You learn early on that those exist in this fantasy world, so I went ahead and parked my giddy self on the couch with tea and popcorn.
I’m also a sucker for cold-hearted, merciless characters, so honestly, this book should just be engraved on my tombstone. And my tombstone will be necessary soon if we don’t get a sequel.

I was instantly hooked on this dark fantasy romance. Audra is cruel and damaged and drew an immediate emotional reaction from me. It took me a while to begin rooting for her, but her character development arc is so good. The relationships are messy and complex. The politics and world-building were well done.
Really looking forward to what Ella Fields does next.

DNF at 25%. It felt like I was coming into the story in the middle of the series, not the first book, so I had no idea what was going on. Without a prologue or some background info to set the storyline up, it was just too confusing

The romance in this book made it. It was so subtle yet so angsty. All I have to say is that we here love a man knows what he wants and is patient enough to wait for it to come to him, where he knows it belongs.
This man gave me Warner vibes and that is my favourite type of book boyfriend. IYKYK.
