A King So Cold

Ella Fields

3.57 AVERAGE

I was utterly consumed by this story. It pulled me in from the beginning and did not let up. It definitely makes me want to read more fantasy novels. This story was absolutely beautiful. The world building had me feeling like I was there and the complex characters had my emotions all over the place. I enjoyed reading this story so much and I definitely hope Ella Fields writes more like this. It is so different and I am absolutely going to be reading whatever Ella brings us next.

Five Mellifluous Stars

I am cursing the fact that I cannot rank higher than five stars.

This author is always one that as soon as I see she has a book coming that I add it to my TBR. I don't even have to have a blurb or a title. I will add it and then wait on bated breath. This book was one of those that I had no idea what it was but I knew I wanted, no that isn't right, I NEEDED it. Whether she is writing new Adult, contemporary, or even a tad dark, she takes it to another level where I find myself wanting to turn the pages as fast as I can while in the next breath cursing how close to the end I am getting because I never want her stories to conclude. This has never been closer to the truth than this book.

I wasn't prepared for the world-building. It was, for lack of another way of describing it, out of this world. Even in the realm of paranormal, this book went well above that and doesn't even really fit there nor does it even belong there. It is magical, spellbinding, brutal, and awe-inspiring. To know that this is her first foray into "PNR" I am gobsmacked. However, I also am not, because when this woman sits down to write, regardless of the genre, she always manages to create something that is stunning and sublime. She is a master wordsmith and the way that she creates a story that invokes a maelstrom of emotions is a true gift.

The characters were stunning. Not only who they were through their actions and characterizations but in regards to furthering the story. There are some that might wonder where this story is going considering that there are two males in lead roles. However, despite the back and forth for a while there between all the characters it never truly felt like I was forced to choose one way or another. I am glad about this because I have always struggled with a love triangle because usually I can never decide and end up wanting the heroine to just become polyamorous, and then all will be right in the world. This is fiction. The struggle is real. The author did an amazing job leaving it up to the reader to decide for themselves what this really was. She also left it at a very good point to continue. I have to say THAT makes me VERY happy because it leaves me hope that this amazing world will be continued in the future. I am glad for that because I would have hated it to only be in this book and never touched again. Add in the steam that came close to melting my iPad and this book was proof that heaven truly does exist.

I have a favorite word, one that means the world to me because one of my favorite people that is no longer with me taught it to me when I was very young, mellifluous. It means pleasant to hear, sweet or musical and for me, it doesn't just apply to music, instead, it also applies to words or things that touch my soul. This author is the truest form of that word for me and this book? Yeah, this book is mellifluously sublime. I cannot recommend it enough. This is my favorite from this author and of 2020.

3.5 ☆

I listened to 5 hours and 26 minutes on this book. I bet myself that I would like this book more if I didn't just read a fantasy. This book is high fae(?) And kinda confusing. Hopefully when I try it again, I'll like it more than I did.

Definitely what I'd expected from Ella, but fantastic all the same.
I suppose it's fantasy, with a game of thrones vibes.
Strong heroine, love triangle. Still Ella at her best

To my surprise I really really liked it.
It's a love triangle but it's not...
The beginning of the book had me totally hooked!!!!
When she shared her memories of how they met so he would regain his memory, loved it!
Overall a good read and will definitely read the next book.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

Tried to read it so many times bc I keep forgetting I’ve read it

It took me a bit of effort to get into this book. I didn’t love the main character, but was really intrigued by the story! Thrilling plot that definitely surprised me.
