DNF at 17%. This book just goes on and on, and the main character is absolutely shitty. I assume this novel has some redeeming quality to it at some point, but I couldn't torture myself to make it that far.
This was surprisingly really well done. Not mad at this at all. I was entertained, nothing was too annoying or cliche, everything progressed really nicely without me getting bored.
The one thing I kept saying throughout this whole book, especially in the beginning, is that a map of this world would have been REALLY, REALLY CONVENIENT. Like, there's only so much "continent, kingdom, cardinal directions, and mountains" you can use before I get confused and turned around. I'm directionally challenged, and so a map would've been nice. It would have added another really great layer to this fantasy story.
Also. A couple personal critiques, which may not technically be bad or disappointing things, but the romance and plot went into a completely different direction than I thought. And I thought this story would be a little more bloodthirsty, with deceit and betrayals galore, but it was kind of tame, tbh. I kept waiting for something horrible to happen (there were so many wasted opportunities, SO MANY). And then, the heroine really wanted and loved one guy, and then kinda changed her mind in the last 75%??? I was kind of like, "wow, you are entitled to your feelings and to change your mind, but damn, that was kind of a 360." And then the author was trying her best to write this route well, with sort of forced plot points and revelations, but I don't know how well this whole thing really worked in the end, which is why I retracted a star. You may like these things, you may not. I'll leave that up to you.
And I seriously thought this was going to turn into a throuple, but...alas, fiction romance will almost always disappoint me in this regard. Le sigh.
Overall, disappointment was at an all time low!
Would I re-read this? Eh. Maybe certain spots. It sure does get steamy.
Would I recommend this? Definitely if you like strong women, fantasy, heavy focus on romance and longing with a generous helping of gore, horror, kingdom intrigue, and badass females, with some fairy type stuff thrown in.

I didn’t love that she and Zad met when she was a child. REGARDLESS of whether or not Zad explained it away with a “we don’t think about these things in our realm” it was creepy.

I never know how to rate a DNF but I just could not get into this , I have a rule where if I don’t like the book by page 100 I move on. It was just too slow for me and I’m not at all into age gap romances … he met her when he was an adult and she was 9 ? Ew
