A King So Cold

lame world building and disgusting characters.

It starts with betrayal.
And when we start to understand the story, plot twists are sent our way, in every single page turn!
A cruel King, and his cold hearted daughter.
A Kingdom shatered by division.
A possible alliance, through the marriage of Princess Audra and Prince Raiden.
A young love, beggining to blossom, that is crushed by the cruelest betrayal.
This book is fast paced, filled with adventure, and lots and lots of plot twists!
Loved every single page, though I wanted to shake Audra and scream "The truest love is right under your nose!!!"

At first, I was honestly really excited to dive into A King so Cold. Yet, once I did.. well, I started to get excited to finish the book. Not necessarily in a good way but I was kind of stuck with endless unanswered questions. So, in a way, I really wanted to figure out who betrayed who and all that jazz.

Eventually I got the answers that I needed but the whole push/pull relationship was just getting on my nerves. I'm all for a dark fae relationship but things just kind of felt forced between the two kingdoms. I just don't see the point of them being married in name but they live separately and sleep with whoever they want. Seems pointless to me.

Then there's the whole mystery which intrigued me in the beginning but just ended up leaving me annoyed and frustrated towards the end. I just think the main characters, and their little side pieces, needed to go their own ways and be happy. At one point, I stopped caring about the game and just wanted it all to end.

Not sure what the next book would even be about but I don't really see myself eagerly going to get it on KU at the moment. Maybe later in life. Maybe.

Wow!

This was an incredible read! Fields writes magic! This is my second book by this author and I’m just stunned at the worlds she creates and how truly fantastic her characters are! A king so cold gripped me, it completely consumed me! Audra is such a brilliant complex character. I loved her, I was hooked from the start, completely entrapped by her heartache and the decision she makes. She is the ultimate lead female, so well written! This book has a love triangle that shakes you up in every way you never see coming! I was so on edge, never knowing what was to come or how I should feel. Equally as on par with Audra’s emotions. Fields does a phenomenal job of making you feel everything the queen is experiencing. Her pain was knife to my heart! By 48% I’d already picked a side and claimed Zadicus as Mine! Be d4mned with Raiden. He’s no king of mine! Gosh! I was so shook up and as each chapter developed another little piece of the past and then more of the present unraveled I was a mess! Gah! I finished this in two days! It was Everything!! Zadicus was EVERYTHING!! I’m still so shocked by how things played out and reeling from all the twists and turns! This is like nothing I’ve read! Now let’s talk heat! This book was HOTT!! I’m talking you’ll need a cold shower scorching, because Field’s knows how to give us Smex! Lots and Lots of it! Ah I’m so sad it’s over! I really got lost in this book and don’t know how I’m gonna read anything else now!

This is everything I’m forever searching for in a romance (I’m convinced she wrote this story just for me LOL). The world-building, the angst, the cruelty, the polished writing, the undying, soul-bleeding love, with a cutthroat, badass heroine and a side of horror… Gah! It’s so hard to find ADULT fantasy books like this with the right balance of spice and plot. Ella Fields writes magical perfection, and I’m addicted.

Oh my fucking god I adored this book so much. It was literally perfect for me. This book had amazing dark fantasy elements, amazing characters and steamy, angsty romance. I am so obsessed!!

The plot was so engaging and had the right amount of character development and action. I was never bored with the battle scenes, masked balls, torture scenes, smut scenes etc. I just never wanted to put it down.

First of all I love our heroine Audra. She is our arrogant, ice cold bitch queen that is ruthless and doesn't take shit from anyone. It is rare to come across heroine's like Audra because of how unlikable she can be but I loved her so much. Even though people saw her as heartless she definitely had one with how much she cared for the few people she cared about and we see also see her grow throughout the book. I also feel a lot of empathy for her because the way she is with having a cold front and hiding her emotions is because of her evil bastard of a father who abused her. Also, when she did care for people she was betrayed and had her heart broken. Seriously, she was betrayed so many times throughout the book and had people already assuming things about her because of her father. Then you have the fact her mother died because of her father and she was also tortured and is now scarred. She has just gone through so much and she is so strong and brave. I just love characters that have a cold front and can be merciless but also feel a lot on the inside and try to protect themselves.

The love triangle was written so well cause I was bouncing back and forth for a while until I had my heart set on Zadicus.

I love Zadicus so goddamn much. He was so caring and accepting towards Audra and just loved her for who she was. I swooned so many times over him and just a few examples is when he would brush her hair or bathe her or when he wanted to kill someone after she was injured. I also loved finding out Zad had loved her and was linked to her for years and he was by her side the whole time in the background. I loved how possessive he could be, especially when it came to Raiden I just eat that shut up. I also felt terrible for him when he had to watch her be married to Raiden BUT I was pissed as fuck when he told her to leave after Nova came back and said those awful things to her but I understand he was hurt and confused. They were so sweet and angsty and I love that they were together in the end.

I love Raiden as well even though he pissed me off more then Zadicus lol. When we got the flashbacks of Audra and Raiden that is when I fell in love with him. He is so cocky and cheeky and I loved how infatuated and caring he was towards Audra. I was honestly not expecting his betrayal and it cut deeep. But I did like that he fell for her quickly and didn't want to go along with the plan which I suspected. But when he was doing sexual shit with another women in front of Audra I wanted to murder him. But I still have love for him and I did like how determined he was too win her back. I seriously wonder where their relationship will go in the next book now that she's with Zad.

This was just such an amazing adult fantasy romance and is definitely a new favourite.

I know shit is about to go down in the next book and I'm so excited and scared!!

DID NOT FINISH: 56%

The world building is exceptionally poor and lackluster. The way the prose is written makes it difficult to figure out who is speaking. The names of the characters are so ill-thought out, I couldn't recognize who was human and what was a pet. The side characters aren't fleshed out enough for you to underrlstand them at all.

Full disclosure: I DON'T read fantasy, well, I haven't by choice for a very long time.

However, the beauty of Ella's words had me captivated. I didn't want to put it down!

The storyline had so many twists, turns, betrayals and banging that I was completely riveted.
Absolutely absorbed.
I loved it so hard that I will be reading anything else from this series, without hesitation.
