Exactly what it said it would be. Not wowed but not disappointed.

I will say that I was under the impression that Sloane would be able to hold her own, but that is patently untrue. Dorian gets the best of her from the jump and though Sloane combats it somewhat she never truly recovers. It takes an unrelated random event to level the playing field. I would have preferred a more even keeled battle to heighten the tension.

I did not like any of the side characters all that much. Sloane's brother Bru was especially disappointing. Given how much Sloane sacrificed for him growing up I was disheartened to see how little regard he had for her once he became popular. The fact that he never had to apologize for it was annoying.

That goes double for Sloane's new bestie Bow whose hypocrisy was off the charts. Dorian can sexually harass Sloane to high heaven but the moment she returns that energy independent free thinker Bow suddenly closes ranks with the spoiled, elitist brats she purports to want no part of. Funny that.

I did enjoy the bond between Dorian and his little rat pack. I'm a sucker for found family and while this was not that at all (they're all childhood friends) it was close enough to give me the same warm fuzzies at times. Still, I did not care for the pack as individuals only as a group.

The smut is pretty good. A little on the vanilla side with dominant undertones. It's not a bad thing just an observation. There are only 3 encounters distributed fairly far apart giving it a bit of a plot over spice feel. On a scale of fanfiction to Ao3, I'd put it at a fanfiction M ie Ao3 T.

It's a poor showing if you enjoy enemies to lovers, however, it fits the bully romance tag it totes to a tee. There is a distinction between these two tropes despite the overlap so be aware going in as the difference could make or break your enjoyment.

There is a cliffhanger which I have to admit surprised me greatly as in my experience these kinds of books are pretty self contained. If there's a series it usually follows a side character in the same universe rather than continue expanding on the initial couple.

Bottom line, if you've read a dark romance before you already know the drill.

Super fast and easy read! Honestly, I really didn't like the mmc at first, but he grew on me the more we got to know about his back story. I really enjoyed this book and the characters. I appreciated having both mmc and fmc povs. I did not see the ending coming, so I was experiencing all of the emotions during the last 10% of the book.

I will definitely be continuing to read the series.
