This is for comedy lovers and perhaps comedy lovers only. While I like Apatow's work and many of the comedians featured in the book, I had a hard time with interviews done in generations past.

I was really looking forward to reading this as I thought I would get to learn some insight into the world of comedy. Instead, I found myself reading the same stories and anecdotes from Judd Apatow. I wish he has edited his book to be more interviewee forward. Instead, I feel like I just read 556 pages of him talking about himself. Towards page 400, I ended up just skipping past subjects that didn't grab me after the first couple pages of the interview. I am disappointed.

I skipped sections with comics I don't care for, but thoroughly enjoyed what I did read.

There's a handful of interesting interviews in here, but many of them take on an exhausting and indulgent character at the hands of Apatow who has a uniquely annoying fashion of bringing up his own experiences in ways that do little to develop his interviewees' responses.

I read this book on a train and finished not long after. But the thing is (I'll be honest here) I skipped a handful of interviews because I neither cared nor knew who some people were. If you know the person, the interview can be funny, but it falls flat when you don't. I think seeing these would have made a more terrific documentary than reading them. I get the whole script/improv thing, but I felt really meh by the end. That's being said, go read Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Ben Stiller & Jim Carrey now!

easy breezy. liked the interview with miranda july. hated lena dunham as much as usual. leslie mann, that was funny/real. would have liked to have seen more female interviews. janeane garofolo. margaret cho. portia de rossi. he mentioned being seen as misogynistic a few times, well, even the score in your book for profits, dumdum. represent women. give them a voice.
