I didn't know what to expect from this book going into it beyond what the synopsis said.
It ended up dealing with much darker and important themes than I would have guessed.
This is a YA book and I thought the topics were handled in a way that is accessible and appropriate to teen readers. That being said, it is a very heavy story.
I found Jam and Redemption to be interesting and well written protagonists. They both had depth and made mistakes, which made them feel real.
The writing style is great at evoking emotion and empathy.
I truly loved this book and wanted to know more about the revolution prior to this book so I'm glad there's a prequel to learn more about Bitter's life.

This might be my new favorite book. Such a unique voice, incorporation of diversity without tokenization, and simple but powerful symbolism. Obsessed.

I found this slow to get going, but once it did I was riveted. Set in an idealised near-future where there is supposedly no more monsters, Jam is visited by a creature who claims her best friend's house is harbouring a monster. Torn between wanting to believe she lives in a safe world, and wanting to protect her friend, Jam joins forces with the creature, who calls itself Pet, and uncovers something that shocks everyone. As usual, Akwaeke Emezi's prose is simply brilliant.

Floored by how much depth and feeling Emezi can pack into a YA novella. My suggestion would be to pick this up without a prompt or reading the blurb and revel in what it makes you think about.
