I am a big fan of Elena Lawson’s books, and in the past, I’ve had the pleasure of ARC reading for her, and I was super happy and grateful to be chosen to ARC read for her first venture into the Omegaverse!
Captivate was such a soul-stirring story! I instantly adored Riley (Omega) and it only grew the more I got to know her throughout the story and what she was able to overcome. While also dealing with a terrible sickness as well. I loved that she was reserved but also brought out the claws when she felt like/needed to, and that she was a genuinely good person. Riley had a rough growing up and it had an effect on her once she had reached adulthood (not wanting to be a burden, keeping to herself), and then she was essentially in hiding and taking suppressants until she made an error and had a run in with the law and ultimately ran into one of her future mates (Miles). This led to Riley having to come home with Miles and the rest of his small pack. From there we see her conflicted journey on a potential pack for her to potentially go to, and her dealing with her sickness. In the end she overcame her hardships and Riley, and all of her mates have a wonderful happy ending.
I absolutely loved Riley’s mates! Miles (Alpha), Levi (Alpha), Fox (Alpha), and Thane (Head Alpha) are the best group of guys for Riley. I loved and found the nerdiness surrounding Miles and Levi adorable. While Fox is the big athlete of the group, I was happy that he was super down to earth and caring, and also super funny. When I came across Thane, I wasn’t sure completely sure about him at first (but I quickly fell for him), but I knew that I reallly wanted to know his back story for why he first came off the way he did. I feel like all of the characters had really good character development, especially Thane, and that the plot flowed really well. I was sad when I reached the end of their story but was so happy that it was a happy ending.
I was so happy with this book, and overall loved the story and all of the main characters. I think Elena did an awesome job with her first omegavers good, and I cannot wait to see what she writes next! Highly recommend!!

🚨 This is not a review. It’s a list of plot events to help me remember the story. Spoilers abound! 🚨

🌶️🌶️🌶️ 1/2

Tropes:
  • Omegaverse
  • Runaway Omega
  • Pack doesn’t want an Omega

  • Riley: Runaway Omega; living on illegal suppressants as a Beta; ghostwriter; has cervus
  • Thane: Endocrinologist; used to work with Cervus Omega patients; parents think other jobs are ridiculous and pressure him to join them; leader of Woods Pack
  • Fox: Football player; dyslexic; parents never thought he was good enough
  • Miles: Techy; Meets Riley in bookstore and rescues her; when her presented as an Alpha, his Beta parents sent him away
  • Levi: Psych student
  • Why did the author do Levi so dirty; (family background? Something crazy like only have kissed her twice before they bonded; yeah, he helps Thane unpack his thoughts but anyone can - Fox was the one who helped him the most! WHO IS LEVI.)
  • Miles meets Riley in bookstore, thinking she’s a Beta; Riley runs away and discovers COD in front of her apartment; they smell her and try to take her and Miles rescues her, saying she is his Omega
  • When he brings her home, he, Fox and Levi fall fast; Thane doesn’t want her
  • She doesn’t tell them she has cervus bc she thinks she’s not staying anyway
  • Has very bad flare up after confronting Thane’s parents; Thane falls in love

I love jumping into an omegaverse world, there is something about the idea of knots and alphas and just being claimed...total melt city...Lawson brought a new spin that I haven't read before and I loved the entire concept!

This omegaverse is losing their omegas to a deadly disease. So while there are laws that protect omegas, the laws don't necessarily keep them safe. You see, to most alphas, omegas are basically looked at as breeding vessels. A pack can obtain an omega, but it doesn't mean love is involved, and Riley, the omega in this book, does not believe in this unjust and unfair treatment. Same girl---same!! While there were moments I wanted to push her into submitting because I wanted the romance to happen, I also respected her strength and determination to stand up for what is right.

When the book begins Riley is living among betas, hiding her scent with blockers and suppressants, but one mistake changes her life forever and puts her in the care of the Woods' Pack, something she never wanted. However, with that pack; Miles, Levi, and Fox take an almost instant shining to her, and it's the head alpha of the pack, Thane, who doesn't approve. It's really no skin off her back if she has to leave, but there are extenuating circumstances that do not allow the five of them to break tides quite so easily and until a new solution is made Riley stays.

It was hard to pick who my favorite of the group was, as it kept flipping with each interaction. Basically, I loved how the pack worked cohesively which is why it made it hard to pick a standout. I would love to return to this world and see what else Lawson will cook up next.

I don't think it's a surprise, if you look at my reading history, that I am a fan of Omegaverse. A world where everyone has a designation, Alpha, Beta or Omega and this denotes your place in society, how you behave socially and how you interact with the other designations. Riley is an Omega, hiding as a Beta and taking suppressants to stop her true nature being exposed, she lives alone and she is doing ok. She ends up under the protection of a pack, Miles, Levi, Fox and Thane. They're all attracted to each other and they are so good for each other, but Riley has a secret and Head Alpha Thane has reservations about them all bonding. This a steamy read that will take you from the depths of despair, to pure ecstasy and to the darkest of days. I'm super excited to read more standalones in this series but I must admit, I really adored this one. Riley is such a great character, she defies society and is fierce, sweet, loving and smart, her Alphas are all about her and even when they're fighting their attraction, their main concern is her - sweet and hot!

Interesting layer with the disease that attacks Omegas (cervas). Wish the pack spice dynamic was explored more and more descriptive.
