I intentionally slowed down my reading of this book because I wanted to keep the sermons spread out to better reflect on the beauty of the message rooted in scripture. I will read this book again as it’s structured perfectly for a Bible study.

In Strength to Love, Martin Luther King translates his sermons into a steadfast, visionary, and galvanizing collection. His commitment to tenderness of heart and strength of mind conveys a striking understanding of vulnerability, hope, and practicality all at once. I would recommend this book to anyone with a complicated relationship with religion or Christianity who is looking for positive and progressive manifestations of faith.

These are re-written (by MLK) sermons he gave from the pulpit in the 50's and 60's. I have a notion to use one, with very few changes to update the topic) myself. It was written in 1956 as a letter from the Apostle Paul to America. Very good book and a wonderful message of using love to conquer hate.

Powerful words and sermons from Rev. King that are still core for us today.

Sixty years have gone by since this book was first published...and we're still dealing with the same issues as a society, which makes the sermons/essays in this book even more important. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to delve deeper into Dr. King's message beyond what's taught in schools and the platitudes politicians use to twist Dr. King's message.

Strength to Love is a magnificent call to nonviolent resistance of our societal ills with deep theology and creative illustration. I am left totally inspired.

There are two truths from the book stand out to me. One is that we are all connected. “We are everlasting debtors to known and unknown men and women. We do not finish breakfast without being dependent on more than half of the world.” The other is that LOVE is POWER. Of course I have heard that before, but what would my life look like if I really lived like that were true? “In a world depending on force, corrosive tyranny, and bloody violence, you are challenged to follow the way of love. You will then discover that unarmed love is the most powerful force in all the world.”
