I really don't understand the hype for this book. It's entertaining, yes, it's interesting and it's a very light read in my opinion. But I feel it's overhyped. Some parts made me really uncomfortable and the edition I read didn't have any sort of trigger warning, something I would have appreciated to at least know that was going to happen. But it's also the behaviour of the characters, the only reason there's a twist is because it's so unhinged you aren't really thinking about other options and I don't feel that's the author being clever.

There's one little foreshadowing I liked

when Millie asks if she should throw away the peanut butter anyway and Andrew says "no, we might need it" or something along those lines, I did think that was a very weird sentence and made me raise an eyebrow

, but also some parts were very predictable too

like Andrew's mother having tortured Andrew like that so that's the reason he does it now

. The ending

with the police dropping the investigation

was quite hard to believe, and it feels it's made that way just so it all ends "well", but I think sometimes it's better to have an ugly but real ending than a fake nice one, even more on a thriller like this that has already showed the reader a lot of disturbing stuff.

A good choice for a palette cleanser if you don't mind some disgusting things.

The second half of this book was paced brilliantly and I raced through it. But the first half was tough to get through. I'm not sure how I feel about this book - I think my expectations were too high when I came in. It's an easy read thriller.

I have had The Housemaid on my TBR for a while but was hesitant to read it because other Freida McFadden reads have been so hit or miss - mostly miss. I saw the announcements about the upcoming move and moved it straight to the front. I did not love it. I have a lot of the some complaints that I have for other books by this author. The characters are awful. Not bad people awful. But badly written awful. They are whiny, annoying and poorly developed. With some of these books I can overlook the terrible characters because the plot twists are usually pretty good. Unfortunately, this entire book was fairly predictable and felt vaguely familiar.
At some point I think I have to stop doing this to myself.
