the queen of the damned was, i think, first and foremost a book that surprised me in its depth. anne rice has this lovely contradictory writing style where every character has their own unique voice and view of the world, and yet her own musings on the nature of life and its purpose, gender, religion, and other similarly heavy topics shine through every character we see - which, in this text, is a long list! while not every pov was my favorite (i disliked pandora, for instance, which was disappointing as i had been curious about her following my read of the vampire lestat), each one taught me something new about the vampire mythos, the character of lestat and the other “main” vampires, and rice’s unique perspectives.

also very captivating was the rich story that was told - the story of the twins sprinkled enough crumbs in the beginning to keep me intrigued while also having a fascinating payoff that made sense (in a supernatural spirits-and-witches-and-vampires sort of way). many readers complain about rice’s descriptions of times and scenes and places, but i consider it a strength of her writing rather than a detriment. and when it matters, she is direct and almost brutal with emotional moments - for those who have read the book, i found khayman’s crime and the conversation between lestat and louis at the very end to be particularly captivating in their own (very different) incredibly emotional manners. one was incredibly painful and uncomfortable and the other brought incredulous joy and laughter - but both drew me in.

and all in all, despite everything, i still love that bastard lestat; he’s learned much and grown much but still remains eternally the brat prince (but i believe louis can temper him). after a brief respite to clean out my tbr and finish a lot of overdue calculus work, i will be back into the chronicles with the tale of the body thief as soon as i can! why do i keep writing these so long? who knows. ok bye

"'Yes, I know,' I said, loving to look at him, to see the anger pumping him so full of life. 'And I love to hear you say it, Louis. I need to hear you say it. I don't think anyone will ever say it quite like you do. Come on, say it again. I'm a perfect devil. Tell me how bad I am. It makes me feel so good!'"

Here I am at the end of the "original trilogy." I had a fabulous time with all three. (The Vampire Lestat remains my favorite.) Anne Rice was a gift. I'm glad it took me so long to read these messy beauties - it ended up being perfect timing.

The structure of this volume was the most different, and I was surprised that the weakest POV for me was Lestat when he's with Akasha. I expected their journey (for lack of a better word) to be a highlight but I preferred literally everything else. The scenes with just the two of them felt less "true," less complex, less sumptuous than the rest. Otherwise I just had nitpicks that didn't really matter in the end. So overall I loved this experience.

Akasha said misandry isn’t real but I’m trying my best

Genuinely enjoyed the plot and loved the characters. Loved learning finally about the different vampires from more than just Louis and Lestat's limited perspective. However it did get quite slow at points and became quite a trudge to get through, Perhaps should've been split into 2 or been edited down
