I started reading this series because it was handy and I'd always been a little curious; by the end of this one I'd exhausted my curiosity. That's not to say I didn't like it; while it didn't turn things around quite as much as #2 did there were plenty of surprises, and one thing in its favor was that it didn't lag anywhere the way the first two did (at points) -- probably because this one braided many story lines, from many different characters. Also, it did a terrific job of refining and expanding its mythology (ie, the origin of vampires) in a very original way that, as before, ties in evocatively with all sorts of human myths and archetypes. That was probably my favorite aspect of it, really.

But it wound up far too epic, which meant that I could very nearly predict the exact events of the climax about 100 pages out. What's more, the narrators of the first two stories did not seem to act true to type -- and I mean the type I took it to be implied they were, not the type they try to convince you they are -- and a few other characters take actions which are clearly out of character (eg, a vampire who in a lifetime of centuries has never created another out of principle, just up and does so) demanded an explanation which never materialized.

I enjoyed reading it, to be sure, but after this one I went on wikipedia and read synopses of several others to cure me of the temptation of reading them. A limited dose of an author who does more or less the same thing (brilliantly, granted, and with different ornamentation each time) is probably best.
