4.07 AVERAGE

I liked the book. I think its a shame the books were published posthumously, I think they could have used the benefit of a good editor.

The characters are amazing Lisbeth Salander in most books would be just a bisexual Hacker, thrown in for NCIS type jokes, but Larsson goes deeper, and really ask the question who is this character what makes her be a nonconformist, what are her views on the world, politics sex and most importantly love.

Mikael Blomkvist, is you everyman character, with an edge, he's a good guy in terms of morals, but not when it comes to women and relationships. He holds little value in terms of love. His best chapters are the ones where his morals are questioned by Lisbeth, their relationship makes this average thriller better.

The problem with the story is

1. It takes far to long for Lisbeth the most interesting character to get involved with the mystery, she pops up here and there where we get back story, but she enters the mystery at like page 250 which is far to long.

2. This book has two main plots, one really interesting the mystery of Harriet Vanger, and the other about CEO of a major corporation, and whether or not he committed Fraud or not, and that it can be proven. These chapters really dragged, but Larsson does make it pretty easy to follow, and explains the business dealing so everyone can understand.

3. The Far more exciting Mystery gets solved way too early, like a 150 pages left too early, the outcome was satisfying I was just waiting for another turn and there was none.

I know a lot of people had problems with the swedish names, but the book does a good job of hammering them in, and does not to get too confusing.

All in all a good ride with a few bumps, but for a debut novel it's really good. I give the character's a 5 and the story a three so I give this one 4 stars. Edit: After reading the Girl who Played with Fire which I found just okay I appreciate this one a whole lot more.

very good book.. once I got past the beginning part that laid out all the politics it was very rivoting!

I feel like there's no point in writing a "real" review of this, since I must be very nearly the last person on earth to read it -- but want to get down my own feelings.

I'd heard from a number of library patrons and friends that the book was slow to get into. I didn't find this to be the case, although having been forewarned by so many people, I guess it's possible that I sort of knew what parts I could gloss over in the beginning before it really picked up. Still, though, by about page 50 I was well and truly hooked, and I read the book in less than 24 hours, which, for a book of this length, is pretty unheard of for me these days!

I really enjoyed the pace the book moved at -- I was about halfway through before it felt like things were really happening (as opposed to being just setup and background), but I wasn't at all bothered by that.

I freely admit that I read this because I want to see the film (both versions) -- I mean, I'm sure I would have read it eventually, but I felt strongly, for some reason, that I wanted to read it before seeing it, and the movies look pretty darn good!

I did find myself wishing for a Vanger family tree -- I guess some editions of the book have one, but the edition I was reading didn't.

I'm totally intrigued by Lisbeth and I hope the other books in the series delve more deeply into her character. There are so many loose ends about her story (and scenes that would be nothing but gratuitous if they weren't setup for things to come later), I can only imagine that we'll learn more about her. I think I need to take a break before diving into the next one, though!

5 stars except why does this white male have women basically begging to sleep w him when he is supposed to be spending a year in professional and emotional turmoil also why does salander have to be brilliant and autistic also why is this white male—written by a white male—seemingly perfect ??? despite having obvious flaws he is portrayed and perceived as flawless. he gets everything he wants and more. he is hailed a hero. and what does salander get? why does she get less when bromkvist gets more without even asking? he entangles himself w all these women feeling and thinking and experiencing and all he does he is work work fuck and work. he doesn’t even tell berger harriet’s story bc he can’t handle it. poor white boy gets exposed to someone else’s trauma and is praised for basically completing a job.

but also undeniably i am totally completely and utterly in love w this book. fantastic writing. fantastic translation. thorough detailed alert funny and honestly very insightful and thoughtful. the plot commands your interest and attention and time—my god i don’t remember the last time i pored over a book so intensely. highly recommend. love. dying to talk to someone abt it.
