really like it

I gave this book 2 stars simply because it kept me interested. It made me want to keep reading and find out what happens next. But I did not enjoy it as much as it seems everyone else did. All of my friends were raving about this book so I decided to give it a try.

It was not as good as I expected. I did NOT fall in love with Alex, I thought he was really annoying and obnoxious. The whole Latino thing was way exaggerated and over the top. Brittany was just okay. I didn't feel connected to her nor did I hate her. I was pretty indifferent about her.

Their relationship really did nothing for me. It didn't grow and it felt like there was no love in it at all. It was really a bad relationship. And the whole "bet" thing was so cliche it hurt. And can we please move on from the whole science lab partners! This is a call to all YA authors... enough is enough.

The very end of the story made me want to throw up. It was written like a poorly written fan fiction. They don't see each other for a year when he broke Brittany's heart and then... BOOM. She says yes to marrying him. That was just...bad.

Overall this book was not my cup of tea, but I do know a lot of people enjoy it. Guess to each his own.

This book was amazing. SOOOOO much drama!

Brittany and Alex are complete opposites. She is the beautiful head cheerleader with the popular boyfriend and he is the bad boy gang member. But they both have something in common, there home life is in shambles and they try to hide it from everyone. They get paired as chemistry partners and constantly fight with each other, that is until the emotional walls around them slowly break down.

I loved watching the bad boy pining for the popular girl even though he thought he didn't deserve someone like her. Brittany tries so hard to please everyone around her and does what is expected of her but Alex seems to see straight through her. This was a fantastic story, I would recommend it to everyone!

For a pretty straight-forward (and predictable) Romeo and Juliet-style teen romance, this does have its moments. Alex (Alejandro)Fuentes and Brittany Ellis are the epitome of the "opposites attract" truth. He's an up-and-comer in the Latino Bloods gang family and she's a go-getter cheerleader and popular princess in their high school. Naturally, there's more to both than meets the eye. She's devoted to her sister, who has Cystic Fibrosis. He's devoted to his mama and to the education of his younger brothers and hates gang life. A chemistry lab assignment is the catalyst that throws them together, and...feel free to extend the obvious metaphor.

In spite of the predictability though, keep in mind that there is a lot of teen (girl) appeal here. For Chicago teens, it has a local setting and a local edge. The story is told in alternating points-of-view trading Alex and Brittany's perspectives, and it uses this device to the utmost effectiveness. And the romance is steamy and yet extremely drawn-out a la that vampire romance that will remain nameless. While quite a few of the supporting characters aren't super strong, the two main characters have a kind of intensity that hooks the reader.

I cried so hard when paco died

The Spanish words every sentence kind of threw me but super nostalgic!

3.5 stars?
I liked it but I felt like it was a bit too predictable and not really believable at all.
That's not going to stop me from reading #2 at all thought.

Very cute read!

I'm honestly really surprised by how much I ended up enjoying this book. The end dragged a bit and the cliche of the characters was annoying at times but there was actually substance to this love story. And the epilogue was adorable.
