I remember reading this for Mayor Daley’s book club-thing. For some reason I wanted to read it again.
Before I get to the part where I freak out about how good this book was, I need to deal with some issues with it.
- Some of the sentences seemed waaay too short and they could have been made longer.
- What Alex or Brittany would think/feel on their own would then be repeated almost exactly in their conversations. It was redundant and didn't need to be there.
- There should have been Spanish translations at the back of the book. I had no idea what Alex and his buddies/family were saying half of the time which ruined it a bit. I'm also way too lazy to write down every single thing and then Google it. It would have been convenient.
- PACO SHOULD NOT HAVE DIED.
- ISA SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A CHANCE WITH PACO.
And now, onto my fangirling.
OH MY GOD.
IT WAS SO CUTE AND FUNNY AND WITTY AND REFUIDJFDGKFDGIKJOSFDGFSD.
I would get tingles/shivers every time Alex and Brittany would kiss or hold each other or be sweet and it was really awkward at school BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT.
I will definitely re-read this and I plan on buying it really, really soon. :)

Alex and Brittany have so much love. I couldn't wait to read more.
romance felt forced, characters were not developed, plot was boring, pacing was slow … but I got a little sad near the end so I guess it made me feel something
An urban modern twist on a story that's been told a thousand times. But just because I had an idea of what might happen didn't mean I didn't enjoy the story. It was an engaging chick lit book that I couldn't put down. I definitely recommend it to people who like romance books.
the epilogue almost ruined this for me. read the book, skip the epilogue. and watch the trailer!
i didn't think i would like this and i was right. this book was just some fucking white savior nonsense disguised as a romance (not even a very good romance tbh). let's not even discuss the racial stereotypes this book enforces. of course this was written by a white person. OF COURSE.
This, and other reviews can be found on my blog Just a lil' lost
Brittany Ellis and Alex Fuentes are from two completely different worlds. She’s a blonde cheerleader with the seemingly perfect life and he’s a bad boy who’s part of a Latino gang. They’re the most unlikely of pairs but when they’re forced to be lab partners in their chemistry class, the sparks start flying – whether they want to admit it or not.
In a way, the story of Brittany and Alex and their forbidden love is not a new one. There have been countless stories told where two people who hate each other yet find their undeniable attraction hard to ignore. What makes this book different is Elkeles’ style in her storytelling. Switching back and forth between the POV of Alex and Brittany, she manages to keep the narrative moving while telling both sides of the story. She successfully captures two very distinct voices in Alex & Brittany, bringing the reader into the facade of a perfect life with Brittany’s family and the constant terror of walking in Alex’s shoes. The constant use of Mexican slang really drove home the difference between these two worlds, and to really set the environments apart from chapter to chapter.
What set this book apart for me was that I genuinely had no idea how the story was going to end. Often with romance stories, you can see where it’s headed and can figure out the ending, but with hiccups and plot points along the way, it kept me speculating on whether there actually would be a happy ending or not. Without letting on which ending I was hoping for, I admittedly did give a big ol’ eye roll to the epilogue. I understood the point of it, but to me it painted an otherwise gritty romance with a taste of cheese.

Oh, my Lord... Alex. I just can't even. He's so friggin' hot. I have this lovely vision of him, and he has this beautiful accent. I really like the ring of his name (Alejandro Fuentes); it flows really well. I love how much he loves Brittany and that he would change so much for her. I loved how cute they were, and how different they are. I guess opposites really do attract. :) At first, this book was a little odd to me with the whole gang and drugs and stuff. But as soon as Alex and Brittany got together, I couldn't put the book down. I enjoyed the bilingual-ness. I could occasionally understand what they were saying in Spanish. I pretty much wanted to smack Colin the whole book. This book was a little darker than the other romance novels that I've read, but I liked it. I pretty much ran to the library and got the next one, it read that good.
