I would say three years ago, this book was recommended to me by someone very dear to me. She told me that it had changed her perception on love forever, and I did not hesitate to buy it. Of course, i left it on my bookshelf and It had collected dust. However, I did not realize how much of a hidden gem it was until this very random Wednesday afternoon. This book tells the parallel story of Shams of Tabriz & Rumi, as well as Ella; a housewife who seemingly has it all. Page by page, it captures so many different themes of love in such a beautiful and effortless way, the author does not only tell you the story, she helps you see it as you go through each of Shams's 40 rules. To say that I have cried only once while reading this would be a lie! I wish to go back in time and read it for the first time again.
"A life without love is of no account. Don't ask yourself what kind of love you should seek, spiritual or material, divine or mundane, Eastern or Western...Divisions only lead to more divisions. Love has no labels, no definitions. It is what it is, pure and simple. Love is the water of life. And a lover is a soul of fire! The universe turns differently when fire loves water."

For someone who preaches so much about love, she sure doesn’t hesitate to leave her family behind (okay, the husband deserves it) but what about the poor children? She drops everything for a man who’s literally just #FoundHisLife™ make it make sense, lady.
I am genuinely interested in Rumi, but the writing style - the dialogue, in particular - in the contemporary chapters was stilted and shallow to the point of being unreadable.
