I LOVE Sam Irby's writing. I read her writing for the first time last year, when I read her book wow, no thank you. I listened along with the audiobook, which is read by the author. I listened to the audiobook of meaty, too, and I think it adds a lot to the story. When an author is the one reading their own story, there's something so cool and full-circle about that, especially when it's something like this: personal, nonfiction essays.

I really enjoyed this book! Sam Irby's perspective on life is interesting and I love it. She's also just fucking hilarious. I loved hearing all her hot takes and the reasons why she makes some of the choices she does. I like the way she talked about tragic things that have happened in her life, and the effect those things have had on her as a person. She keeps it real. She also has a lot of recipes that are great for avoiding diarrhea. She could write a whole diarrhea cookbook and I'd read it, especially if she made it an audiobook. There were so many fire quotes in this book, so I'll share some of those below. This is a really great book by a really great and hilarious person, and I highly recommend.

“I’m just allergic to assholes. Man, I’m so relieved. And so is my asshole.”
“Two years ago, after he finished scraping barnacles off the sides of my underused cervix,”
“I am excited because I’m 33 years old, and the idea of a man in my life totally bores me.”
“3 cups pineapple juice. If you juice a pineapple yourself, never talk to me again. 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice. This I can do. 2 Tablespoons cranberry juice. Save the rest for your next UTI.”

Good stuff! Funny stuff! Real stuff! Read it!

4/5 stars: ★★★★☆

"I need a person to dig my car out of the snow in the winter and find me a parking space every night within ten blocks of my goddamned apartment because I have to live in Rogers Park where the rent is cheap and I can still get away with waking up forty minutes before I need to have my ass at work."

Most of this was both insanely relatable and hilarious. The only part I didn't like was the chapter about feet- I hate feet.

But otherwise, I feel you Samantha Irby, from living in Rogers Park even though the parking sucks because the rent is cheap, to never wanting to cohabitate with another human being ever because "I like the whole bed and I hate anyone touching and moving my artfully disheveled possessions all the time."

Also...I agree with almost everything in between, but it feels weird to share those things publicly because this book feels like your diary and well, if people want to know what you have to say then they should read it themselves...which might not make sense if you haven't read this book, but it makes sense to me.

Samantha Irby is so over the top and funny, but also so real. Just like “We Are Never Meeting in Real Life,” I both laughed at cried at this one. Makes me want to write my own essays.

Oh, Samantha Irby… the most wildly honest, comically tragic, shockingly witty wordsmith I’ve had the pleasure of reading. In Meaty, her debut essay collection, Irby recounts some of the most absurd and calamitous stories any human has ever experienced in the history of the world. And yet, she is kind and brave enough to share them with us. We thank you.

P.S.- Don’t let my 3-star review deter you. I couldn’t help but (unfairly) compare Meaty to the pure perfection that is We Are Never Meeting in Real Life.

DNF. Had some amusing moments, especially on the gracelessness of aging, but overall very hetero focused to the exclusion of any other, and I got tired of listening to how many $hitbags the author hooked up with. Girlfriend needs to do better for herself! Plus I'm kind of in a screw the patriarchy mood and this author just wanted to enable it. Finito....probably done with Irby for a good while.

For some dumb reason I was worried this wouldn’t be as good as We Are Never Meeting In Real Life but it was! Samantha Irby is so fucking hilarious, I don’t know if any books have mad me LOL as much as hers! The woman devoted so many pages to talking about diarrhea and for that I thank her!!

Memoirs/Essays read by the author are amongst my very favorite listens - Samantha Irby is no exception. It was fun, quick, and I definitely laughed more than once.
