This 200+ page rant had me gasping for breath at some points. Samantha Irby writes about her troubled childhood, battle with Chron’s, and various failed “relationships” with hilarious wit and a massive dose of attitude.

It felt like I was reading a friend’s blog, which technically I was because Irby is in fact an avid blogger. I enjoyed her use of humor to deal with rough situations. Her transparency and candor, while often gross, was refreshing to read. Her long form rants were quite funny, or anytime she went off on a list of things she wants.

I wish there would have been more essays like My Mother, My Daughter. They showed Irby’s life and incredible struggles with the shock-value humor mostly stripped away. This story gave insight into who the author is and I was eager to read more about her life, versus more blog-entry type soliloquies. Around 70% of the way through the book I found myself skimming due to the repetition. More personal storytelling would have saved it for me.

3.75 stars. Fantastic, unique writing; just wanted more of her life story.

I read Quietly Hostile right before this and decided I needed to read more Irby. She is hilarious, but I will say I could do without the pieces that are just her giving a recipe or describing episodes of shows (real or otherwise).
