His to Take by Katee Robert

Erin is home, she's telling everyone she's just in between shows, but it's looking a bit more permanent than that. She's lost, feeling like a failure, and now she's been stood up for a date. Warren doesn't recognize this side of Erin, he's a marine home for the holidays, after noticing she's been sitting alone for thirty minutes he has to tease her. After seeing the lack of light in her eyes, Warren knows he has to do something and starting up their old game of truth or dare sounds just right. It might just be the right time to mention his feelings for her have changed in the past year, especially after a scare in the military.

I received this novella about a month ago, in that time I forgot the entire synopsis and that ended up working in my favor. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and absolutely enjoyed the banter between the two main characters. Novellas are notoriously quick reads, we all know that, and there is a fine line between giving too much or too little, Katee Robert gave just enough. Mixed in with the main character's banter is history of their past and descriptions of both Erin and Warren, something I find a lot of novellas lack. I felt like I knew my characters features, personalities, and habits, all while reading their present interactions. I think it's an art to progress a story forward without pausing to give those details. I really liked Warren, I mean really liked him. At one point I might have said out loud, "Girl, if you don't want him I will trade you spots." Reading from his POV made me like him even more, because he wasn't just a man in uniform and old lover, he was charismatic, confident, and had a hidden side of emotions that the reader gets to glimpse before our other main character did. Erin, our female MC, is totally jaded and a bit lost, but Warren brings out this side of her that she put away. She rushes into every situation, but that's what makes this book all the more interesting. Her temper was hilarious and I really liked how she had to re-evaluate how she approaches situation in order to get her happiness.

The book takes place over two days, 95% of it in just one night, however it just works. This one is a lot sexy, but also a lot funny. Katee Robert managed to cover so much in those two nights, the character growth is pretty tremendous, and the relationship transition is just right. I especially appreciated that it wasn't random thing between the MCs, these two had so much history and that really made the situation believable. It also is book 3.5 in the Out of Uniform series, so if you've read the others (which you should), it's some final closure for characters and the small town we've come to know. While this book is short, it packs a lot of punch. Plus, if you're looking for your next steamy read, this totally covers that category. The chemistry between Warren and Erin is totally hot. Katee Robert is a great writer and I definitely suggest any of her series.

I really enjoyed reading this short story. It was marketed for free through Goodreads deals so I decided, why not try it? It can be read as a stand alone. I have never read anything by this author before and I wasn't confused as to what was happening in the story line.

It definitely made me have interest in reading more works by Robert. I think it was written extremely well and in a way that will appeal to many readers, not just military spouses. I can't wait to read the first books in this series!

I really wish I hadn't waited almost 2 months to write this review, as I'm now struggling to remember the finer details about this book (I've read another 45 books since I read this). My biggest issue with this was how quickly it wrapped up - it felt a bit like it was trying to cram a novel's worth of relationship building and conflict into a short story. Otherwise, it was a fun read, if not entirely memorable.

This was a short and sweet novella. It was a nice change of pace to what I’ve been reading lately!

A short (I read almost the whole thing during a single lunch break last week) but H-O-T addition--and final offering from--Ms. Robert's Out of Uniform series of 3 novels and 2 novellas. His to Take brings the series to a satisfying conclusion and would probably work fine as a standalone--but really, the entire series is definitely worth a read, so why wouldn't you ? ;)

Erin and Warren are lovers with a (secret--or is it?) past--he's in the Marines, she's been trying to make a name for herself on Broadway, but when they're both in town the sparks have a tendency to fly like crazy. Erin (aka "Mini Me"--bizarrely, her mother named her two children Aaron and Erin, much to her younger child's chagrin) is trying to keep the fact that she was fired from her last-big-chance show and is back in town for good on the down-low, though, so she's less than thrilled to see that Warren's around too. Afraid he'll figure out the truth, she tries to keep her distance from him, but she's no match for his sexily tempting game of truth or dare...

(This made two books in a row--after [b:Say You're Mine|26104181|Say You're Mine (Shillings Agency, #5)|Diane Alberts|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1440414156s/26104181.jpg|46048399]--that utilized that game in some pretty creative ways. I had no idea what I've been missing out on all these years...)

Reading about Erin and Warren's night of crazy dares and truths was a lot of fun, and it was easy to root for them to get the chance to be a real couple at last. Since the "fix" for their relationship isn't terribly complicated, it makes sense that their story plays out in a novella. The fact that it's all happening during the holiday season is the sweet icing on top of a slice of naughtily indulgent cake.

(Not fruitcake, though, because that stuff's just wrong on every possible level. Just saying.

Aaaand...clearly I've spent too much time writing papers this weekend. Is the semester over yet???)

I received an eARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This book took all the excitement I had from the blurb and turned into a dud and that just makes me angry.

I have been on a binge of second chance romances – that angst filled communications between two (ex)lovers and their way back to each other somehow currently warms my heart and this book was supposed to have been a part of that binge but it sadly never met my expectations.

On one hand you have a heroine who is back home to lick her wounds and on the other hand you have a Marine with fear of commitment. On the night that they are together, everything comes to head – from their attraction to their inability to move on from each other.

Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t anything wrong with the plot or the writing or even the characters themselves but somehow all of them together never really made an impact on me when I was reading and by the last page, I was thrumming with dissatisfaction – this could have been an amazing romance, one for the stars even *which meant I would have re-read it* but somehow it failed to make a zing and that just made me sad rather than angry by the end of this book.
