Everything Ashley Woodfolk writes is perfect! The realistic characters, the depiction of friendship and relationships. I can’t stop reading!

Beautifully written. I've never read anything written that way before. It was different and it carried the story well.

As for the story itself, I have to say, as an aroace person, I just couldn't get it. It was beautiful and moving and tragic in all the right places. But I just don't get how one can love someone to the point of destruction like that. Rationally, I know there are plenty of people who loose their minds when they're obsessed with their partner, but I don't get it. So some of the story was kind of lost on it just because it was about something that I would never experience.

Very poignant. Line that sucker punched me:

I knew how to love that made your house and you feel less abandoned. and you loved me in a way that meant I carried fewer things around in my pockets. For years I felt like I was disappearing. And the treasures and trinkets I held close helped me feel like I was really here. But you made me know it. That I was here. That my hereness was important. No. That my hereness was essential. That if I faded away there would be someone other than my family who would notice. And how do you say thank you for that? How do I ever stop saying thank you for something like that?

“The truth is
I am infinitely powerful.
The truth is
I only surrendered to you because I wanted to.
The truth is
I love you
and there is strength in that, too.
But maybe there’s too much unbridled power
in a love like ours
for someone used to holding it all in her own hands,
like you.”

This book is so stunning, intense, and emotional!! It’s told in prose and there is so much beauty in it. It’s about queer girls navigating their intense romantic and toxic relationship, and coming to terms with the fact that they may be better off without each other.

Nothing Burns took me right back to high school, when I was figuring out my sexuality and relationships. The author has an excellent quote in her author’s note about this book that I’ll leave you with:

“I wanted to write a book that showed that the end of a relationship doesn’t mean you failed, or they failed, or you weren’t meant to be. It just means you were meant to be for a time. And even when you get hurt, the feelings and experiences are still real and important and meaningful.”

I really struggled with getting into this. I admire poetic writing, but it's a hit or miss. It either engages me or it doesn't, and here it sadly didn't. I'm giving it 3-stars instead of the 2 I was debating on because it’s more me than the book itself, though some part of it did resonate with me and it truly was beautifully written

“Love is blind.”
“Time heals all wounds.”
The truth?
Love can see just fine. But it’s nearsighted.
Shortsighted.
And distance is the only thing that heals.”

3.5 stars.

Incredible.
