Solid, solid read! The world Bancroft builds with the Tower is amazingly intricate. The characters are enigmatic, complex, and intriguing (especially Marya, who Bancroft chooses to keep a mystery in this first installment). I'm expecting the plot to really thicken in #2.

Loved the premise of the tower, looking forward to seeing what other ‘ringdoms’ have to offer
Partendo dal fatto che mi è piaciuto, non è assolutamente quello che mi aspettavo. E' un mix di generi (l'elemento steampunk è quello che emerge di più andando avanti con la storia) che però crea una storia unica. La scrittura molto scorrevole dell'autore è un grosso punto a favore di questo libro, che compensa un po' la lentezza nella prima parte: si ha infatti la sensazione di brancolare un po' nel buio, come se non si capisse a cosa serva quello che succede a Senlin in termini di trama, e credo sia più che altro dovuto al fatto che una volta perduta Marya non si scopre subito cosa le sia successo. Poi però nella seconda parte l'azione è più presente e il ritmo più incalzante.
I personaggi sono assolutamente eclettici e mi sono subito affezionata a Senlin. Il suo percorso di sviluppo come personaggio è veramente ben costruito, si vede come cambia man mano che procede nella torre. Parte essendo un preside sempliciotto ed idealista e più tempo passa nella torre, più deve ricredersi sui suoi ideali. Infine, una delle cose che ho più apprezzato dell'autore e del libro è la critica sociale: la torre diventa una metafora per l'umanità e porta il lettore ad una riflessione sulla società.
Sicuramente non è entrato nella mia top 5, ma sono comunque curiosa di vedere come l'autore continuerà la storia!

This was good it just wasn’t for me. I probably would have loved it in high school though!
Good start, just took a while to get off the ground. A tad too much world building, which is something I never thought I’d say.
Slight spoiler: there’s also a section at the end where Thomas worries he may find his wife “ruined,” like Voleta was almost ruined (AKA might have had sex with someone else or might have been assaulted, who knows) and I didn’t like the connotations of that

Action packed with a loveable and relatable main character. This book kept me guessing all the way through and I'm still guessing now it's done. The writing style is great.
