I thought this was pretty good, I didn’t correctly guess who the killer was. I liked all of the science but thought Theo missed some obvious stuff too. Anyway, I’ll probably read book two.
This book was a roller coaster for me. At some points, I couldn’t put it down. At other points, it was like reading an 8th grade science book. I would have rated it slightly higher - but the ending was a total disappointment in my opinion. I won’t explain why, so as to avoid any spoilers, but I felt it had so much potential but somewhere along the way it just got totally unbelievable and stupid.
I can’t really say I enjoyed this novel, but I think as a series it has potential and I’ll probably want to read them despite my tepid feelings for the main character.
Die hard
O combinatie intre Die Hard si Mindhunter, cu mai putina actiune si cu mai mult forensic-science. Finalul e destul de brutal, Tarantino style. Ar merge de un serial, zic.

This one I wanted to read a long time, it did not disappointed me actually I found it pretty fun in all.
I really liked Theo, he was our improbable hero and he was a scientist that caught my attention, he was pretty weird but noble and he actually wanted to do a little good when he discovered something of importance.
The plot left me wondering sometimes were was all this going really because sometimes I even believed myself something weird was going on and then happened something even weirder.
The ending was pretty interesting actually, I was like what? and having a lot of fun by the end, the revelations and all the chase were nice and maintained me on my edge, a good read this one.

Had me on the edge of my seat!!
This was such a great book! Loved the suspense and all the detail! Theo's viewpoint is interesting and the manner of his discoveries is unique! Can't wait for the next one!

The Naturalist is a compelling murder mystery where Computational Biologist Theo Cray is sucked into a murder investigation. One of his former students is murdered and he is a suspect until her murder is written off as a bear attack. Using his ability to spot patterns he realizes that several animal attacks and disappearances are the work of a serial killer. As someone who can’t let go when he spots a pattern, this leads him on a chase to a burnt out meth town, where he sees another victim. Soon he is finding bodies all over Wyoming and Montana using a program meant to find natural predators who eat natural prey. Dismissed by multiple law enforcement agencies he finds a decades long murder spree and a chilling, but brilliant killer who is not content to sit back and be caught.
He has to go back to the past, when the killer wasn’t quite so experienced to find evidence that points to someone. This raises a lot of flags all over making it easier for the killer to know someone is on his tale and just who that is. Through it all he abuses his University credential to take evidence and to get people to talk to him. There is also a lot of chilling Paleontology that shows this killer wouldn’t have been that abnormal throughout most of history.
Through it all he has to examine his own motives as he tries to leave things be, but realizes he can’t. He also realizes he has to be tougher, the man who is walked over by his superiors at work, corrupt police, and a couple of meth addicts cannot be the person who contends with this monster that makes his murders look like animal attacks. With help from people he meets along the way he might just stand a chance.

This was a speeding chase. Serial killer vs scientist. It did need some suspension of believe at times but the pace was so fast that you just had to keep reading.
My biggest issue with this novel was some believability issues. I just really struggled getting into the book because I kept sitting back thinking that there's no way a biologist is going to be doing all of this. I didn't inherently have a problem with the computer simulations/probability theorems, that was all a pretty cool angle. I just really struggled with the crime fighting biologist for some reason.
Solid 4.5. Great mystery/thriller read. Loved that it had a lot of science but it wasn’t too hard to understand.
I love the way Theo’s mind worked, searching for patterns. He took matters into his own hands because no one would listen to him. He cared for these girls when everyone else had given up on them.
He’s so intelligent and has a vast amount of knowledge stored away. (The author really did his research to write this.)
Spoilers...
The whole faking of his death thing seemed like a bit of a stretch to me. To pull it off that quickly seems a bit far fetched, but he had the motivation and the knowledge.
I look forward to continuing on the series.
