I just don’t know why I keep reading current YA. This was bad. I wanted to like it but it just felt mashed together. Not to mention every character is a bad person. I‘m supposed to be rooting for these teenagers who just murder people in cold blood. Bleh. Also the entire book and it’s not resolved. You have to read the next one! 😂😂
if you are here looking for a lot of romance, this is NOT the book. While i really like this book but the the sub theme was very interesting and it was a great story line, the sub theme was more so the general theme with romance as the SUPER SUB theme. I mean we don’t even get anything close to interesting happen until something like 350 pages in. Great book though I really liked the plot and i will definitely read the second book

Romeo and Juliet, but China around the time of the revolution, and with zombies. Honestly, so much better and more unhinged than I was expecting.
The subject was interesting but it was still somehow painful to read. I found it very boring and difficult to get through.

i personally struggled to read the first third of the book for some reason. the world building takes up a huge chunk of the first bit of the book, which felt a little unnecessary to me. however, the rest of the book was very captivating and very easy to read.
i adore the way that this books focuses of the darker social political landscape of the time rather than the relationship between the protagonists, however i wish there was more context given rather than random paragraphs scattered within each new stage of their relationship.
also it feels strange to portray teenagers who have had romantic history when they were literally like fourteen as something that comes out sounding more mature than i'm sure it was intended? and then to further the fact that it has become serious and more mature by the time they're nineteen? idk i just didn't agree with the phrases used to describe their history/present relationship.
it just feels a little unbalanced with the plot vs the background details, but overall it comes together and a pretty enjoyable read.
