I loved Wesley and Maise's dynamic, I was definitely laughing out loud in a lot of parts. Probably one of the better YA novels I've read.
It took me a long time to finish because I didn’t connect to either of the characters or understand a lot of their decisions. The writing is good but the plot went in this dramatic, unrealistic direction that wasn’t my cup of tea.
The age difference was just too much for me. probably because I am the teacher's age more than the student's age and feel VERY aware of how different those ages are. On top of all that it was wrapped up a little too neatly.
The way this book was written wasn’t for me as I don’t like how Maise talks to the reader.
Also, I didn’t really like the main character.
Stark, no-holds-barred, gut-wrenching look at a harsh reality of life. For mature readers only due to graphic descriptions, but writing is excellent. Impressive debut.
I should start off by saying I don't give 5 stars out easily. I'm picky. I've read plenty of teacher student books. Same old story. This was different for me. This story explored the wrongness of the subject. That the wrong is what made these two people desire this relationship even more. The writing was riveting and flawless. This story was beautiful and painful. I absolutely adore it.
huh. i liked this a lot more than i liked black iris. i am very surprised because tbf, i would never have even touched this book based off the summary if black iris hadn't sold me on raeder as a writer
anyways this is about maise o'malley, eighteen years old, having a bad time of things. she has a very intense thing with an older man she meets at a carnival and later finds out he's her teacher. life and love continues to happen
so yeah. teacher/student romance. you can see why i would have rejected this out of hand. which would have been a mistake because this book is REALLY good. it gets dark but it's ultimately a hopeful story. plus raeder is a really talented writer, she hits the sweet spot where her writing is both pretty and easily readable. i'm really looking forward to cam girl now
