I can’t believe I’m going to say I didn’t like the ending.
I read this ages ago, but remember it being very literary and grimy (in a good way.) I think this author has a lot of potential, and if she decided to write more, I'd read her.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book:
The Pros:
The writing is addictive.
I love the chemistry of the main characters
My first forbidden romance.
I enjoyed the ending although it felt a little predictable.
Will's Mom is the freaken best!
The Cons:
I hated the MC she was just a bratty teenager.
Sometimes it felt like it was no real plot just sex scene after sex scene.

Excuse my language but this was FANFUCKINGTASTIC. I absolutely loved this book. I was apprehensive at first and once I got into it then boom, blown away. Wow. This book deserves me writing a proper review, soon.
I really enjoyed the prose and flowery writing. Also enjoyed the story, taboo or not, despite not really ever connecting with the love interest.
...You should love something while you have it, love it fully and without reservation, even if you know you'll lose it someday. We lose everything. If you're trying to avoid loss, there's no point in taking another breath, or letting your heart beat one more time. It all ends." His fingers curl around mine. "That's all life is. Breathing in, breathing out. The space between two breaths.”
I enjoy New Adult books. I can read them over and over, and although some are pretty much the same, I still enjoy them. I especially enjoyed unteachable, I've always liked forbidden romances, and this one was a very good one.
I was hooked from the beginning, and what a beginning it was. From the moment I started I couldn't put it down. This was just a very well written story. Unteachable is full of lust, romance, forbidden and unrequited it's got betrayal, trust, friendship and loyalty, pretty much every sort of ingredient a good NA book should have.
I really liked Maise, she isn't the typical innocent 18 year old that you sometimes come to meet in a NA book, she's a bit of a rebel, sticks up for herself, and although she lacks some self respect (based on her past sex life), she still manages to be a likable character, but there is enough back story to her past that explains the way she is in the book. When her and Evan (Mr Wilke) are on the page together, you get the intensity and the obsession they both have with each other in their relationship. Their relationship is naturally a complicated one, but it's a powerful one, and although they try their hardest to stop it, they always come back to each other in some way.
The entire story is handled really well with regards to the forbidden student/teacher romance, this is truly a captivating story, with the romance and the illicit affair that Maize and Evan embark on. It'll just leave you wanting more and more.
The ending, although I wouldn't call it happy, it's sort of bittersweet and it leaves you wondering, huh, ok then. To me it felt a little open and like their story wasn't yet finished, and I'd be happy with a sequel BUT I'll also be happy to leave it how it was, because to me, although it did seem open and bittersweet I think you can definitely take it as a happy ending, and you can just sit there and ponder after you've closed the book. You can think it over.
This was most definitely one of my favourite reads of 2013 so far, and I would happily re-read it, and I most definitely look forward to more from Leah Reader, because she most definitely has things to say, and the woman can definitely write a story.
So, if you haven't read Unteachable yet, then I most definitely suggest that you go out there and read it, I guarantee you won't regret it.

********* 5 Stars *********
This is going to be a short one but not for lack of merit. It's just that I could go on and on about the writing, but all I'd do is bore people (and myself). It's one of those taboo new adult romances about an 18 year old girl and her high school film studies teacher. They meet at the local carnival without knowing who they really are, have a one night stand and then realize the truth the first day of class.
It's beautiful. The writing. Not so much the story. This is going in my favourites shelf, solely and exclusive because of the writing. In fact the writing alone is probably responsible for a good two stars out of the 5 I'm giving it. I've always thought that brilliant writing can make even the shittiest plot sound like a literature gem. I've heard this author's style repeatedly described as lyrical. Yes, it's very much poetic, I suppose lyrical is appropriate. At first it took a while to get used to it, considering some of the wildest metaphors she used. Then around the 20% it gripped me and nevel let go. I felt like I was high all along.
The writing is very concerned with the lighting and the colours of the setting, the weather and the cosmos itself, all things that make for beautifully described pictures. I loved the crisp, clarity of her voice and the metaphor and the pacing. It was all like a scintillating knife, shiny and edgy. I've never read someone with such a unique voice and I often wondered if this style comes natural for Leah Raeder or if it's something she has to work hard at. It would seem that creating such perfect sentences would take some measure of hard work, if not... wow. Just wow. Leah, I kinda have a crush on you (see shelf).
As for the actual characters and story (haha, they take second seat to the writing, isn't it kind of funny?), I didn't love Maise but I thoroughly respected her. I also didn't love Evan. I initially was very much neutral about him because there was very little information about him anyway. The big reveal.
Regardless my criticism of Evan through that major reveal, God... the writing. Can I just leave it at that? This book kicked me straight in the inspiration center. I once more believe that words can be paint and sparkle and the world itself a canvas. ~

Spoiler
really bothered and crept me out. He had had an affair with an underage student before, which took away from the romance and uniqueness of what he had with Maise. Not just that, but after fucking up that bad and knocking up that student, he still had the lack of sense to get involved with another student. That to me spoke of predator, and very shifty character. It also made me somewhat doubt their HEA and would peg it more as a HFN.Regardless my criticism of Evan through that major reveal, God... the writing. Can I just leave it at that? This book is a rare e-book find: a New Adult book with beautiful, lyrical writing, fascinating characters, and an interesting, well-paced story. I absolutely loved this book. Reminiscent of White Oleander by Janet Fitch with the characters and the writing, but it still lacks a bit compared to Ms. Fitch's prose.
I don't love that the new thing is all of these teacher/student stories, but this book took a new, and darker, turn on all of the other ones.
I don't want to say too much to ruin the story, but I highly recommend this book, and I look forward to more from Leah Raeder.
