I'm not loving this book, though I've heard it spoken of with love by others. Maybe I just don't get Maise's life, but neither main character is particularly compelling. And the descriptors of passion are... lackluster? Awkward? Not sexy? Buuuuuut that's probably just me, since most people love this story.

I hated this book. I only read it because I've heard SUCH lovely things about it (repeatedly). But this one didn't hit the marks for me. I don't necessarily have anything against an age difference, though 18 and 33 feels a little... predatory? to me. I probably should have stopped when I realized I wasn't enjoying it, but I thought maybe the ending would redeem it. And it did not. I was surprised by the ending, since the male character in the story LOVES Casablanca. But I feel like the thing about the love story in Casablanca is that he lets her go in the end, BECAUSE he loves her. That's NOT what happened here. Their relationship felt really toxic to me. I felt like he expected her to make all of the sacrifices, and, honestly, I didn't find either character compelling. Which is maybe the appeal for some people? There was just SO much lying and the idea that either of them could be in love with each other when they knew NOTHING about each other was far-fetched, to say the least. I guess I just prefer my romance to be a bit lighter - there was no light in this story. And why was EVERYONE in love with Maise? That felt unnecessary to the plot of the story - even her mom's drug dealer wanted her. Eye roll. I guess, long story short, if you liked Ezra and Aria on Pretty Little Liars, you'll probably enjoy the relationship in this book. Though Ezra and Aria aren't as far apart in age.

Meh.

I seriously, really enjoyed this! It was t at all like a romance novel, I though. It was so much more in-depth and meaningful. It was two people caught up in one problem.
I don't have much to say on it since it was fairly short, but I really loved reading this, it kept my attention the whole way through.

50% dnf

Thought it would be a good student-teacher romance; I was enjoying this book cuz of the WMC too then I didn’t. I really hated the MMC he’s such a perv. And then I hated the WMC too. And I didn’t like how it had the open ending
emotional slow-paced

This book is SEXY. I can't think of any other way to put it. I love that Maise is flawed and strong and independent. I love that Evan is flawed and stupid and so in love. I love that Wesley is the best friend a person could ask for, in his own way. I love it all. This is New Adult at its finest. Yeah, the plot was a little bit difficult to wrap my brain around at first, but as a loyal Pretty Little Liars viewer, I am familiar with the student-teacher relationship plot. But this version really shows the danger in it all, and it's SO GOOD. I'm so happy I randomly ordered this on Amazon after seeing the cover (yes, I judged, and it turned out well for me!). Elliot Wake (writing as Leah Raeder) is so lyrical that I can't wait to read more of his books. I will be recommending this to many people in the future. READ IT!

Unexpectedly, breathtakingly beautiful. Written with poise and lyrical wonder. Definitely recommended.

I've had Unteachable for over a month and continued to put off reading it because I was concerned that Maise was going to be too tough for me to take an interest in. After putting aside two books recently whose heroines were both obnoxiously macho acting, I just couldn't stomach another. However, Maise was in a class of her own; I was impressed by her fortitude, bravery, intelligence, and prodigious vocabulary! :)

I neither seek out nor avoid books featuring teacher/student romances, and Maise was eighteen years old from the story's beginning. Unteachable was so much more than its description, though. I got so caught up in the prose and highlighted a great number of passages. The observations, descriptions, and dialogue were quite astute, and Maise and Evan's sexual chemistry was off the charts HAWT!

I appreciated it in its entirety - including the lovely déjà vu style ending. It was a very captivating read!
