Literally devoured in two days (would have been faster but work and sleep UGH). Hooked almost immediately and had to keep reading to find out what happens. Immediately bought second book ❤️

So I am really not a big fantasy reader. I normally don't like with fantasy where they don't explain the things to you that aren't real and you're sort of just expected to understand them but I didn't think this book did that. To me it felt accessable and like understandable. I completely flew through it because I was desperate to know what happened. I genuinely read it in one sitting. I was so gutted when I found out it was part of a series and there is a sequel I need to read to find out what happens!!! I mean I'll read it but I'm cross about it.
I really liked the characters. I liked Elspeth and I actually genuinely really liked The Nightmare.Like I felt like that had this like actual empathy and humanity for Elspeth that I really liked. I obviously loved Ravyn (can we just accept I will be spelling and also saying every single name wrong). I really believed the romance between Elspeth and Ravyn and desperately wanted a happy ending. In the next one? Maybe? I hope so.
I loved Jespyr and Elm (I can spell that one). I really liked Emory and I also really really liked Ione and the aunt - Opal.I'm hoping that Ione has got like all that love that Opal clearly has?
I thought the book was excellent. I thought it was written brilliantly, the pacing was just right and it was so intriguing. Highly recommended

This was just ok. A magical fog plagues the land causing people to be forever lost in the woods, and infects children with a magical illness that gives strange powers but at high costs. The king has ordered the death of anyone found infected. The main character was lucky, her family chose to keep the illness a secret, and she has let them believe she had no powers. She doesn’t tell them about the monster that lives in her mind. She meets unlikely allies, including a dark, brooding love interest.
Perhaps it is the magical deck of cards that just didn’t do it for me.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll read the sequel, the cliffhanger I’ve been left on is too great a temptation.

Made me so irrationally mad at some parts and admittedly I also don’t think the relationships and characters were written as well as they could have been, but it was definitely entertaining and I read it in a pretty short time. The world was definitely interesting and some of the descriptions were very beautiful. Overall solid with some minuses.
