Cut out shapes and creative use of color layer to create different animals. We have the name of the animal on each page and then flip to see the name of the cut out shape. At the end of each section we see the shapes and colors that created the animals in that part. The colors can give you a brain freeze, but the concept and design of this book are creative and engaging.

Review: A bold and colorful book that introduces us to many animals of different colors and shapes. Every cutout page gives the reader the chance to experience something new, different, and unexpected. Children will enjoy learning about different concepts in a fun and entertaining way.

On the front cover animals composed of different-sized circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles combine together to create the face of a tiger. Ehlert uses bold orange, red, green, and blue for the animal; meanwhile, the text is a bold black among a purple background. A simple heart under the short summary covers the back side. With every page turn, we remove a shape as a variety of bold colors welcomes us. We’re introduced to the cutout shape on the left and the animal created with multiple shapes and colors on the right. When we complete each set of animals, the page focuses on the several different shapes surrounding two circles in the middle of the page. The last few pages list and pictures each concept: shapes with their names, blocks of labeled colors, and the different animals featured in the book.

This book can be used as a fun read aloud for children as they are also reviewing their colors, shapes, and different animals. They can also build upon their sight words with the different animals used in the book. The book could also be used in conjunction with a field trip to the local zoo. The students could go on a scavenger hunt to find some of the animals they read about in the book. In addition, children can also try and create their own animals using a variety of shapes and colors on construction paper.

I think this is a very fun and creative book incorporating many different concepts. For some of the animals, I do have to take a little time to fully absorb the picture in order to see the featured animal. I imagine that children may also not be able to see the animal right away. I’m glad that Lois Ehlert provided us with the pages at the end that help us fully grasp each concept. It makes it easier to review everything that was included inside the book.

For: animal/shape fans; readers looking for a playful book with cutouts.

Possible red flags: potentially fragile pages.

A clever art and shape book but definitely not a book for reading. And as a cutout book, I can't believe it would hold up to much use. Probably would work kind of as a child's art book though. But the pictures were a little stylized for that purpose. So flawed but quite interesting. 3.5 of 5.

A beginning board book for young children about shapes. This is very clever. She uses cutouts of the shapes and colors to create animals inside each shape and then we see the shape. She will use 3 pages at a time to create an animal face and then as you turn each page it changes and we see how the shapes do this. This is too young for my kids, but for the level this is going for, it’s a great book. Lois is very creative and I enjoyed it.

The nephew thought this was neat actually and he gave it 3 stars. The niece didn’t read this.

Lois Ehlert does it again with this clever book on animals and shapes. With each flip of the page, there is a new and surprising animal! The design of the illustrations is truly lovely. There are even pages that hint at the shapes to come in the next few animals. At the end of the book, there is an "index" of sorts with the names of the shapes, colors, and animals!
