tbh sarah dessen’s skill at this kind of 00s YA is unparalleled. and her type is also exactly mine, like i’m sorry a dark curly hair manic pixie dream boy is. well. the dream boy
[This is the "edgier" Sarah Dessen with drinking and sex talk - for the older teens.]
FINALLY. i'm finally done with all the sarah dessen books i own. and i couldn't be more disappointed. honestly. none of them stuck out to me. i couldn't care less for any of the characters. there was legit nothing significant about them. which sucks, bc now i'm stuck with five sarah dessen books i don't really like.

Thought and Plot
Love is dead...if it ever existed in the first place, according to Remy. After her mother cycle through 4 failedd marriages and currently newly wed to husband #5, Remy doesn't want to stick around long enough to become serious about any relationships. She has a set formula and time line when it comes to having a boyfriend. When the time is up, she moves on.
After a rough, elbow knocking first meeting with Dexter, she doesn't want anything to do with him. He doesn't meet her required boyfriend standards. Even as he persists, she regrets him...but there's something about him. Defying a lot of her own rules, Remy takes him on. Her can't be "the one" after all, Remy doesn't believe in forever romances.
This was an interesting read about a girl who feels so jaded about love. She has planned multiple weddings for her mother, watched her get married to 5 men (now), and she has watched all the previous marriages disintegrate; why wouldn't this one? And why would she put herself in that position. This attitude makes her come off as a cold hearted b*tch (quoting her friends) and Remy isn't put off by the title, at first.
Dexter vexes her as much as she likes him. He doesn't not do things because they might not work out (enough negatives for you?). He perspective is, what if it does work out? So what if it's not perfect? The point is you tried and now you know for sure. Remy rather not bother. lol
In Conclusion
Still an awesome read I would recommend to others. I enjoyed Remy, but I loved Dexter. Sigh...sad to have to come back to reality.
Status in library: Currently missing, will be replaced if not found
Content: There's drinking and smoking in this book. Few swears such as bitch, shit, and there may have been a slut in there somewhere...
Recommended age: I'd say 14-15ish about up, mature younger reader if you feel they can deal with some heavier content. There is a lot of drinking and some smoking and throwing of beverages. PG-14!

For as talked up as Sarah Dessen was to me, I will say that I was a little disappointed. This novel very definitely was a young adult novel, so I guess I can't be too disappointed, but I felt this story lacked a few things.
For one, I didn't really like the main character Remy. I can take a cynical character, but I just felt that she didn't really change all that much in the story. I understood why she was the way she was, but in the end her "evolvment" just wasn't that big of a deal.
Also, I don't know if I was just always blind to this, but since when did books for teenaged girls involve so much drinking, sex, and cussing? Yes, I know that all of this existed in high school, and wouldn't be impossible for 18 year-olds to encounter, but I just feel like it's not something that should be written for that age. Where has youthful innocence gone?
Those are really the only qualms I had with this book. I love love loved that Chris and Jennifer Anne had a happy story. I also like that even though it was predictable, Remy's mom ended up the way she ended up. But I truly think her character showed growth. And I love the way her mom looked at love. You fall down, you get hurt, but the risk is worth it. Sure she didn't end up with anyone, but who's to say she won't find someone?
I thought Remy's relationship with Dexter was cute, and I absolutely adored Dexter. I loved that he was different and that's what helped her realize that he was worth it and love was worth it. I'm so glad that they ended up together.
Overall wasn't too impressed with this book. Don't get me wrong, it was worth the read, and I will for sure give Sarah Dessen another chance, but if she strikes out again, that may be it for me.
